No other wine I tasted among the new releases in Montalcino achieves this unique level of aromatic finesse and distinction. The bouquet is almost purely floral in character with a strong emphasis on pressed rose petal, dried violets and potpourri. The fruit tones are less emphatic and include bright cherry and red currant. In the mouth, the wine's compressed texture is accented by fennel seed and licorice. the 2009 vintage had more power and heat, but this version shows elegant restraint. 93+ (ML)

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is silky, soft and open-knit, especially within the context of what has been the norm at Biondi Santi for the last few decades. Freshly cut flowers, red berries and mint all open up in the glass, but it is the wine's decidedly mid-weight structure that truly stands out. The 2011 is a very rare young Biondi Santi that will drink well pretty much upon release, as shocked as I myself am to write those words. The bright red cherry, raspberry and floral overtones have an almost Nebbiolo-sense of brightness. Drink 2017-2031

Jacopo Biondi Santi was already making wine at Il Greppo when the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Annata was produced. His father, Franco Biondi Santi, would pass away in 2013 at the age of 91. The winemaking approach is unchanged despite the father to son transition. This wine shows extra richness and texture with focused fruit aromas that are graceful but also powerful. There are hints of ripe fruit with dried cherry and prune buried deep within the bouquet. In the mouth, this Brunello shows good structure and acidity with a slightly denser feel compared to past vintages.

This red has a firm backbone and a solid texture, with harmonious flavors of plum, blackberry, licorice, cocoa and espresso. Concentrated yet graceful. Drink now through 2026.

The 2011 Reserva Selección Especial, from a warmer and drier year compared with the average (as well as the previous harvest), has a similar blend as the regular Muga Reserva; it is 65% Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, and it was fermented in small vats with indigenous yeasts. The different varieties and grapes are fermented and aged separately, the first year in new oak and the second one in used barrels. 2011 is a powerful vintage for this cuvée, which now shows quite marked by toasty aromas. Warm vintages usually need longer in bottle to integrate the oak, but experience shows that it gets absorbed and in fact the evolution of this wine in bottle is very good. Even if the nose recommends to wait, the palate is very balanced, with remarkably ripe tannins for such warm year, which can sometime produce some harsh tannins. Not the case here, where the wine shows good elegance and balance. This is a very reliable cuvée, quite stable across vintages.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino bursts from the glass with freshly cut flowers, violets, leather, licorice and black cherries. Firm underlying tannins lend vibrancy to the voluptuous fruit. The Casanova di Neri straight bottling – sometimes referred to as the “white label” – is made from some of the estate’s cooler sites. In 2007 the wine has more depth, fruit and overall harmony than is typically the case. Bright acidity frames the long, polished finish. In short, this is a fabulous wine from Giacomo Neri. Along with the 2006, the 2007 is one the best and most complete vintages I can remember tasting in some time. Most importantly of all, though, it is flat-out delicious. As I have consistently written in the past, this limited production cuvee, from a 12-acre site that contains a parcel of extremely old vines, 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, is meant to last three decades or more. Tasting like a liqueur of rocks interwoven with creme de cassis, espresso roast, toasty oak, and enormous levels of tannin, it is neither out of balance nor astringent. It is a concentrated, backward, impeccably balanced St.-Emilion made with an uncompromising view of the craft of winemaking. It displays superb intensity, a fabulous texture, a foreboding, tannic overlay, incredibly ripe, pure fruit, and perfectly aligned acidity and tannin. Forget if for a decade, and consume it between 2020-2040.

Bright ruby-red. Superripe aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and crushed rock; like a liqueur of botanical herbs. Then dense, sappy and superconcentrated, with a powerful minerality, solid acidity and a note of black pepper perking up the wine's rather clenched core of fruit. Finishes with a boatload of tannins. This almost painfully intense wine, a great success for this chateau, needs up to a decade of cellaring.

From the brilliant proprietor Stephan von Neipperg, the 2010, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that hit 15% natural alcohol, is ripe and intense but exhibits good minerality and freshness as well as lots of blueberry and blackberry fruit, with hints of charcoal, licorice and asphalt. Rich and full-bodied, with no hard edges, this wine should drink beautifully for 10 or more years. 

The good news for consumers is that there are over 11,500 cases of this wine, which was produced from the plateau of Saint Philippe d'Aiguilhe, planted on pure limestone and clay.

Winemaker notes: We didn't release Valbelle in 2008 because the wine had been blended into the Gigondas Classique. This is nice to see Valbelle coming back in 2009 with its very specific style. It generates complexity, depth and balance. 2009 Valbelle combines well the tannic power of the vintage with the roundness and the softness always found in Valbelle. Find notes of strawberry, thyme, white pepper and graphite.

The palate is medium-bodied with a dry, quite savoury entry, powdery and slightly edgy tannins. The fruit appears to be fading although the secondary flavours and compensating with touches of Chinese 5-spice, orange zest, dried blood and sandalwood. Classic old skool St-Julien towards the finish that has moderate length."

Another sleeper of the vintage, this under-priced, beautifully made Pauillac exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, licorice, tapenade, and spice box. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannin and low acidity, it is a pure, expressive wine to drink over the next 12-15 years.

Liquid purple, relatively opulent on the nose. Quite deep and trying very hard. Attractive spiciness and no excess of dryness of tannin. Well managed and well balanced. The only reproach one might make is that it is a little mild and low key - but then so is Lafite. Quite a bit of weight. Very vigorous. Very good! Very fine tannins, there in abundance. It's worth remembering that as far as I know none of the merchants who tear round Bordeaux like me tasting wines en primeur taste blind. Tasted at BBR’s 2005/2009 tasting in London. The Haut Bages Liberal has a refined bouquet, timid at first but growing in confidence with dark berries, wild hedgerow, truffle and scorched earth. The palate is medium-bodied with a racy entry, crisp blackberry, graphite and bell pepper with a masculine, tannic, chalky-textured finish. It is a little rustic at the moment, but full of character. This is a gorgeous opaque, ruby/purple Lalande de Pomerol that no one will be able to resist. Drink it over the next decade.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. Wow - this Saint Estèphe appears to be just getting into its stride. This seems reticent on the nose at first, but modest coaxing reveals scents of blackberry mixed with gravel and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, firm tannins and a pleasant salty tang on the finish. Masculine and structured, with good persistency and a lovely austere personality, Basile Tesseron and his team have overseen an aloof but engaging Lafon-Rochet that could be the dark horse of the appellation. Tasted January 2014.

This classic, powerful, firm Lynch Bages may be as concentrated (if not more so) than the 2005. It possesses a dense purple-tinged color, tell-tale cassis notes interwoven with hints of roast beef, savory herbs, spice box and subtle oak, good acidity and ripe tannin. The result is a full-bodied, fleshy Pauillac that will benefit from another 3-4 years of cellaring. It is capable of lasting 20-25 more years. Drink 2014-2039.

The 2006 Château Lynch Bages has another quite vivacious bouquet with lively black cherries, kirsch and wild mint aromas that do not hold back. I love the purity here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannin, well-judged acidity, a gentle grip in the mouth, and plenty of lightly spiced and surprisingly intense fruit on the bravura finish. The Cazes family oversaw a very sophisticated Lynch-Bages in this vintage that may well surpass many peoples' expectations.

A sensational effort for the vintage, this textured, opulent, superb Lynch Bages is already strutting its stuff and should easily last for 20 years. Medium to full-bodied with an opaque dense purple color, notes of flowers and cassis, a layered texture that builds incrementally in the mouth and tremendous purity and depth, it can be drunk now or cellared for two decades or more. Bravo!
