Blason d’Issan 2011

Blason d’Issan, second wine of Chateau d'Issan, was introduced from 1995 onwards to enable selection amongst estate vines growing in the Margaux appellation area. Fruit from youngest vines is used to produce this wine, which respects the identity of its terroir, while offering a tasty round fruitiness, which can be enjoyed earlier. Blason d’Issan is also aged in barrels for 14 to 16 months, one third of which are new. Annual production is around 120,000 bottles.

Tasted at the Chateau Batailley dinner at The Square. The 2004 Batailley is fresh and well defined on the nose compared to the 2002, which has less vigour. Here: notes of blackberry leaf, briary, cedar, tobacco and boysenberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, well-defined entry, pert acidity, quite tight towards the finish but good structure and focus, the finish demonstrating far more precision than I have noticed in the past. As usual, it has a foursquare finish thanks to the growing season, but a very commendable Batailley. Drink 2012-2020. Tasted January 2010

Tasted ex-château and single blind in Southwold. The Beauséjour Duffau Lagarosse 2008 has fine intensity and delineation on the nose with dark brambly fruit and a touch of smoke. Complex and rather enigmatic. The palate is tannic and grippy on the entry, nice purity with a cohesive tannic finish that is harmonious and long in the mouth. It is still a little broody, but I appreciate its personality. Tasted January 2012.

As Belgrave improves each year, it reveals a character that is close to the elegance and style of Saint-Julien, right next door. Chateau Belgrave is situated in Haut Medoc , just west of Beychevelle in St Julien . It is also next door to Chateau Lagrange , which is also in St. Julien. Just a few meters further and it could have been in St. Julien. This 2010, while dense, is balanced, and its rich blackberry flavor is already integrating into its firm tannins. This should age well for the medium term.

Another tightly knit wine, despite the fact it is made from 100% Merlot and was showing an opulent, flamboyant character from barrel, this wine now displays excellent density, sweet black cherry fruit intermixed with pain grille, hints of crushed rock, and a distinct earthiness. There is plenty of density, but the wine exhibits relatively high tannins in the finish and seems to be going through an extremely closed state. Give it 3-4 years and drink it over the following 15.

Did Lord Byron give this name to the château, swearing that there was nothing like it for "chasser le spleen" (getting rid of the blues)? Or was it Charles Baudelaire, who is said to have come to Moulis in the 1860s because the artist Odilon Redon, who illustrated Les Fleurs du Mal, lived near the estate? From the Villars family, the 2012 Chasse-Spleen has a saturated ruby/purple color and chunky, medium-bodied flavors of cassis, earth and spice, It cuts a somewhat powerful personality across the palate and finishes with moderate tannin. This is a good to very good Mèdoc that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and last for 12-15 years.

RP 91  Surprisingly evolved and complex already, this wine is even more powerful than the 2010. Reaching 14.5% natural alcohol, the vines were cropped at an astonishingly low 20 hectoliters per hectare. A final blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, this wine is dense and rich, with a dark purple color, loads of creosote, camphor, black raspberry and blueberry fruit, as well as hints of sweet cherry and toasty oak. Lush, pure, full-bodied and intense, this is a stunning sleeper of the vintage, much like the 2010. It is capable of lasting at least a decade.

Clos Les Lunelles located in the Cotes de Castillon appellation was acquired by Perse family in 2001, who was already well-known in Bordeaux for owning numerous estates including Chateau Pavie and Chateau Monbousquet .

Part of the empire of the Chateau Mouton Rothschild, this estate was once known as Mouton Baronne Philippe. This impressive, deep, opaque ruby/purple wine, with loads of charcoal, crème de cassis and a flowery-ness, this is rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, quite pure, and avoids any of the astringency or hollowness that some Médocs possess in this vintage. The wine is complete and finishes authoritatively. The tannins are there, but ripe, integrated and velvety. This is a very impressive d’Armailhac to drink over the next 20-25 years. Drink: 2015 - 2040.

A very pretty wine for the year, the 2012 d'Armailhac is plush, open and seductive. Dark red cherry, tobacco, wild herbs, smoke, leather and game are all pushed forward in a pliant, supple Pauillac that is already quite open and expressive. Dark red cherry, plum, tobacco, smoke and licorice meld into the pliant finish, all with sweet floral overtones that add to the wine's considerable appeal. Drink 2017-2032.

Chateau Desmirail 2012

Desmirail was classified a 3rd Grand Cru Classé as part of the 1855 classification. The wine is the result of a parcel of exceptional terroir within the Margaux appellation, which it represents perfectly with its delicate balance. Vinification is carried out using modern techniques and equipment, but with an overarching respect for tradition. This results in a wine that can be enjoyed in its youth, but which also has a tremendous capacity to improve with age. Strict grape selection and carefully adapted maturation methods are both key to making Château Desmirail into the Grand Vin it is.

Coffee, mild tobacco, cocoa, black fruits and subtle, refined oak on the nose. The palate shows light tannins marked by morello cherry. Enjoyable and seductive from now on.

"Blackish crimson. Nose needs considerable encouragement. Quite firm and fresh – without the sweetness that characterises so many 2012 Médocs. Therefore a rather welcome change. But it's a little stringy on the end".

A wine that has pretty density of fruit, with lots of dried-berry and currant character. Medium to full body with fine tannins and a fresh finish. A little tight now. This year has more cabernet franc at 20%, along with 60% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% petit verdot. Better in 2017.

TASTING SCORES

The resulting wine has both the power and the     elegance.  Nice freshness on the nose and palate. The tannins are firms but silky.

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VINTAGE

Winter and Spring were dry. Since the beginning, climatic conditions predicted an early vintage. The water deficit worsened a little more up to July and the high temperatures in June made the vine suffered.  The Merlot sagged after flowering because of these unusual dryness and heat.

2011 experienced unusual weather conditions that ultimately benefited many Cabernet Sauvignons. The grapes had a very good concentration of phenol compounds and very elegant tannins. The challenge of this vintage was a very strict sorting of the grapes. However, there is a lower yield (- 10%)  due to the weather, and the berries were rather small with a thick skin.

Chateau Fleur Cardinale 2011 (RP93)

This gorgeous 2011 continues the succession of impressive wines made by this estate since it was acquired by the Decoster family. Beautiful black raspberry, blueberry and black currant fruit notes intermixed with a touch of spring flowers emerge from a wine with excellent balance, nicely integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood, and a healthy saturated ruby/purple color. This full-bodied, long,captivating Fleur Cardinale is already drinking well, and should continue to do so for 10-12 years. It is a sleeper of the vintage. 

16/20 JANCIS ROBINSON:

Black-hearted crimson. Very ripe there’s even a touch of strawberry sweetness to the black fruit. Firm, thick tannins, not dry but quite hard work and slightly bitter on the finish. Drink 2016-2024

A ripe, fleshy style, with lots of fig and mulled blackberry and blueberry fruit. Good toast and ganache notes thread this together, with a muscular feel on the finish. An overt style, but well done.

The flagship wine from the Decoster family, this blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon has been a hugely successful wine since they acquired this 58-acre estate and revolutionized the level of quality. This is consistently one of the best St.-Emilions and over-achieving for its classification. The 2012 has pure, striking aromatics of blueberry, black raspberry, minerals and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, ripe and multi-dimensional, with a beautiful texture, this is stunning wine that completely dominates its classification and over-delivers in terms of quality and potential longevity. It should drink well for 15 or more years. Yields were a modest 34 hectoliters per hectare from an unusually late harvest – October 22 to November 2.

The 2012 Fleur Cardinale is a beautiful example of modern Saint-Emilion. Silky tannins and soft contours wrap around a core of red cherry jam, wild flowers, mint, cinnamon and white pepper. Dramatic and expansive on the palate, the 2012 shows remarkable nuance for such an intense wine. All the elements fall into place effortlessly.

The round tannins, delicious fruit and forward character suggest it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.

Winemaker's Notes: The Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2004 presents a beautiful ruby red color. The nose is very dense and ripe, it offers a combination of blackberry and "pain grille" with added hints of spices. On the palate, this wine shows its harmonious structure. The tannins are well-balanced. This vintage has already started to express its personality but it will need few more years to show all its potential and developing as it does ever more complex flavours to give increasing pleasure.

"It has a light but well defined bouquet with notes of redcurrant, boysenberry, mint leaf and cedar with good intensity and vigour. It reminds more of Las-Cases ’81 in some ways. The palate is medium-bodied with a dry, quite savoury entry, powdery and slightly edgy tannins. The fruit appears to be fading although the secondary flavours and compensating with touches of Chinese 5-spice, orange zest, dried blood and sandalwood. Classic old skool St-Julien towards the finish that has moderate length." 

91 points Wine Spectator (Oct 1994) : Polished, big, dark-colored, with rich and opulent aromas and flavors and loads of tobacco, cedary and berry character. 

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Oct 1989): A top success for the vintage, the 1981 Gruaud-Larose is dark ruby, with a full-intensity bouquet of ripe black currants, spicy oak, plums, leather, smoked meat, and violets. This wine is concentrated on the palate, with rich, tannic, lingering flavors.

Very dark but healthy. Smells a bit like a Dão - something vaguely goaty! Sumptuous fruit and texture - black berries - what a lot of work has gone into this super-polished wine. Well done! Lots of interest but maybe could do with very slightly more freshness for an even higher score. Certainly makes a statement... Big and dense.
