Azelia's 2012 Barolo is fresh, floral and nicely lifted in the glass. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherries, spices, mint and rose petal lift from the glass in the 2012 Barolo. An excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years, Azelia's straight Barolo is all about balance and understated harmony. The style is gracious, perfumed and weightless, with pretty saline notes that give the wine its sense of proportion. This is one of the best straight 2012 Barolos I tasted. Fruit sources are 70% Serralunga and 30% Castiglione Falletto. The 2012 spent two and a half years in cask. Hail was an issue in Bricco Voghera, so Azelia did not produce a Riserva. All the best fruit went into the straight Barolo.

Full-bodied with superb concentration as well as a beautifully textured mouthfeel, this 2006 should drink well for 10-15+ years. Like all of the Neipperg estates, this wine's capsule has a clever anti-fraud device, which I think will be increasingly employed by many French estates.This nearly 30-acre estate, which was purchased several years ago by Stephan von Neipperg (owner of Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte), performed exceptionally well in 2006.

From the brilliant proprietor Stephan von Neipperg, the 2010, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that hit 15% natural alcohol, is ripe and intense but exhibits good minerality and freshness as well as lots of blueberry and blackberry fruit, with hints of charcoal, licorice and asphalt. Rich and full-bodied, with no hard edges, this wine should drink beautifully for 10 or more years.
The good news for consumers is that there are over 11,500 cases of this wine, which was produced from the plateau of Saint Philippe d'Aiguilhe, planted on pure limestone and clay.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. Wow - this Saint Estèphe appears to be just getting into its stride. This seems reticent on the nose at first, but modest coaxing reveals scents of blackberry mixed with gravel and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, firm tannins and a pleasant salty tang on the finish. Masculine and structured, with good persistency and a lovely austere personality, Basile Tesseron and his team have overseen an aloof but engaging Lafon-Rochet that could be the dark horse of the appellation. A traditional winemaking approach is adopted by Pascal Delbeck, new owner and formerly Cellar Manager of Bélair for more than 20 years, working with nature in the vineyard and adopting a minimalist intervention approach in the winery. Since 2005 the Moueix family of Libourne have taken a share in the property and now work hand in hand with Delbeck, with impressive results. Bélair shows signs of finding once more its former glory as one of the finest wines of St Emilion.

The 2006 Clos du Marquis has a typical bouquet for this cru with forward and lavish black cherries, cassis and incense aromas, perhaps more oaky than some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with an insistent grip in the mouth. This is surprisingly backward with impressive density. You can feel the weight of black fruit in the mouth, although it needs more finesse and precision on the finish. Give this another five years and you could have a "dark horse" on your hands.

Roc des Cambes is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec that spend 18 months in 100% new French oak.

Interesting comparing the Roc des Cambes with the Tertre-Roteboeuf, for here there is a little more drive and intensity on the nose, more volume emanating from the glass with pomegranate and cranberry scents intermingling with fresh gravel notes. The palate is soft and sensual on the entry with layers of fleshy red berry fruit. The tannins have a Burgundy-like finesse and there is a lovely touch of Schezhuan pepper numbing the tip of the tongue on the finish. This will be a fascinating Roc des Cambes.

It's worth remembering that as far as I know none of the merchants who tear round Bordeaux like me tasting wines en primeur taste blind. 92 points Wine Enthusiast : The second wine of Calon Segur, the 2011 Marquis de Calon reveals a dark ruby color as well as juicy black cherry aromas, an attractive texture and a soft style. It is a pleasant, light to medium-bodied effort to consume over the next 4-5 years.
Representing just 30% of production and with the majority of fruit sourced from low yielding merlot vines planted on drought resistant clay based soils. The ripe damson and fruitcake laden nose has a top note of dark chocolate whilst there is lively acidity and freshness to the front palate which is filled out with plump and fleshy plum fruit and a touch of spice. Tannins are fine grained and velvety in texture, the lasting impression is one of elegance, balance and refinement. Technical director Vincent Millet considers “2011 closer to 2010 than 2008 in terms of quality”.

Drink this sleeper of the vintage over the next decade.

The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, chalky tannins. There are plenty of potent tobacco notes here with a touch of spice on the finish. It is a little introverted at the moment, this should develop nicely with several years in the cellar. Tasted January 2014.

This imposing estate owes its name to Connetable Talbot, the English general and governor of the province of Guyenne who was defeated at the famous Battle of Castillon in 1453.
Talbot's vines grow in an ideal location bordering an estuary, on some of the region's most highly prized gravel rises which alone produce great wine. Talbot is one of the oldest estates in the Medoc, and its reputation has been in the hands of experienced managers, and always shown itself to be worthy of its inclusion in the 1855 classification.
Owners of Talbot since the early 20th century, the Cordier family have perpetuation the commitment to quality of their predecessors. At Talbot, wine is very much past, present, and future. Therefore, tradition and technical innovations both count a great deal.

The Deuxieme Vin of La Petite Eglise is pure Merlot picked on 16th September that is aged in 50% new barrels. It has a refined bouquet with pure blackberry and raspberry with well-integrated creamy new oak that does not impede upon the fruit profile. With time it offers a touch of cedar that is very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive balance and a silky smooth texture. It has some oak to subsume so it will need 3-4 years in bottle, though it does not have the tension or persistency one can find in the 2009 or 2010. Still, this is very fine and probably will be good value. Tasted April 2012.

The second wine of L'Eglise Clinet is better than many châteaux's top wines in 2011. This is extremely fine and aromatic, more open than it often is at such a young age, with sweet fruitcake and red cherries on the palate, filigree tannins and a classy, perfumed finish. The Clos René, located in the Pomerol appellation, has belonged to the Garde family for more than a century. Jean-Marie Garde currently runs this 18-hectare vineyard planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec. The domain is largely under-valued, considering the quality and regularity of its cuvées. The wines of Clos René are well made, in a classical and elegant style and with a wonderful aging ability, while being reasonable priced.

Its tannic structure is firm but velvety and will continue to soften as the wine evolves over the next few years. I would suggest holding onto this bottle for three to four more years before popping the cork.

One of the bigger, more tannic and powerful wines of the vintage, although it is only 14.4% alcohol, which puts it well below some of the blockbusters in the Cotes de Castillon, this wine exhibits wonderfully pure black raspberry, black cherry and graphite notes intermixed with hints of cedar and licorice, in a medium to full-bodied, slightly softer and less extracted style than usual. This is another sleeper of the vintage that should drink nicely for up to a decade.

94 Wine Spectator : A gorgeous wine, with an interplay of ripe, dripping blackberry, cassis and plum sauce flavors providing the flesh, offset by smoldering charcoal, tobacco and bittersweet cocoa notes, which provide the angles. The long finish has nice intensity. Best from 2012 through 2022. 1,175 cases made.
Winemaker notes: We didn't release Valbelle in 2008 because the wine had been blended into the Gigondas Classique. This is nice to see Valbelle coming back in 2009 with its very specific style. It generates complexity, depth and balance. 2009 Valbelle combines well the tannic power of the vintage with the roundness and the softness always found in Valbelle. Find notes of strawberry, thyme, white pepper and graphite.
