This estate was owned by the Dubois-Challon family since 1916, and covers 13 hectares of vines planted, predominantly, on well-drained limestone-based soils. The Château is the immediate neighbor of Ausone, situated on the south-facing slope of Saint-Emilion known as the "Côte", overlooking the distant Dordogne river. A traditional winemaking approach is adopted by Pascal Delbeck, new owner and formerly Cellar Manager of Bélair for more than 20 years, working with nature in the vineyard and adopting a minimalist intervention approach in the winery. Since 2005 the Moueix family of Libourne have taken a share in the property and now work hand in hand with Delbeck, with impressive results. Bélair shows signs of finding once more its former glory as one of the finest wines of St Emilion.

The Clos René, located in the Pomerol appellation, has belonged to the Garde family for more than a century. Jean-Marie Garde currently runs this 18-hectare vineyard planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec. The domain is largely under-valued, considering the quality and regularity of its cuvées. The wines of Clos René are well made, in a classical and elegant style and with a wonderful aging ability, while being reasonable priced.

The first Cabernet grapes were picked on September 10th under perfect conditions, with yields a little lower than average. As is usual at Tenuta San Guido, the fruit for Sassicaia was gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel using natural yeasts. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine spent two years in French oak prior to bottling. This is certainly an exceptional Sassicaia, with a sumptuous nose of ripe, creamy black and red fruit with cedar and spice notes. The colour is by no means dark (as is often the case with Sassicaia), and the impression on the palate is one of controlled power underpinned by gorgeous sweetness and flowing elegance. This is a very confident wine with real authority and presence, beginning with a magnificent attack of rich cassis and ripe griotte cherry followed by cigar box and leather notes, and a long finish of savoury bay leaf and minerals. It's deceptively structured, the tannins wonderfully ripe, creamy and finely textured, while the juicy acidity also suggests that this wine has a very long life ahead of it. This 2015 exhibits everything that you’d want from Sassicaia - and more - because of its winning combination of winemaking savoir-faire, world-class terroir, old vine fruit, and an outstanding vintage. It is unarguably stunning.

Full-bodied with superb concentration as well as a beautifully textured mouthfeel, this 2006 should drink well for 10-15+ years. Like all of the Neipperg estates, this wine's capsule has a clever anti-fraud device, which I think will be increasingly employed by many French estates.This nearly 30-acre estate, which was purchased several years ago by Stephan von Neipperg (owner of Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte), performed exceptionally well in 2006.

This imposing estate owes its name to Connetable Talbot, the English general and governor of the province of Guyenne who was defeated at the famous Battle of Castillon in 1453.

Its tannic structure is firm but velvety and will continue to soften as the wine evolves over the next few years. I would suggest holding onto this bottle for three to four more years before popping the cork.

We till the soil, cultivate grass between the rows, drain the plots, add organic supplements and prohibit the use of weed-killers, so that the vines’ roots find it easier to penetrate the soil made of silica and clay.
The quality of this beautifull setting is very favourable for the Cabernet Franc grapes providing us with rich tasty wines that are elegant and more-ish.

Azelia's 2012 Barolo is fresh, floral and nicely lifted in the glass. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherries, spices, mint and rose petal lift from the glass in the 2012 Barolo. An excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years, Azelia's straight Barolo is all about balance and understated harmony. The style is gracious, perfumed and weightless, with pretty saline notes that give the wine its sense of proportion. This is one of the best straight 2012 Barolos I tasted. Fruit sources are 70% Serralunga and 30% Castiglione Falletto. The 2012 spent two and a half years in cask. Hail was an issue in Bricco Voghera, so Azelia did not produce a Riserva. All the best fruit went into the straight Barolo.

A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc from this well-situated vineyard on the plateau of Pomerol, which is owned by Chantal Lebreton, this wine has 13.5% alcohol, somewhat low in this vintage, but it displays plenty of kirsch, sweet cherries and red currants along with some sandy/loamy soil and roasted herb notes in a very sexy, up-front, lush, medium to full-bodied style.

Vertical in style and quite structured, the 2012 could use another few years in bottle to fully come together, which will also help the chewy tannins to integrate a bit more fully. Roc des Cambes is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec that spend 18 months in 100% new French oak.

Interesting comparing the Roc des Cambes with the Tertre-Roteboeuf, for here there is a little more drive and intensity on the nose, more volume emanating from the glass with pomegranate and cranberry scents intermingling with fresh gravel notes. The palate is soft and sensual on the entry with layers of fleshy red berry fruit. The tannins have a Burgundy-like finesse and there is a lovely touch of Schezhuan pepper numbing the tip of the tongue on the finish. This will be a fascinating Roc des Cambes.

Another strong effort is their wine made from young vines, the sexy, soft, lush, even opulent, dark ruby-colored La Gravette de Certan. This is a richly fruity wine, but also complex and evolved. I was stunned by how good it is and recommend it highly. It could and should be drunk over the next decade.

Voerzio's 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo is another terrific example of the year. Striking aromatics give the 2013 much of its lifted personality. Sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, mint, citrus and white pepper are all beautifully sculpted throughout. This is an especially delicate wine that impresses with its poise and freshness.
