Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by hints of graphite, black currants, spice box and charcoal. This medium-bodied 2011 reveals excellent to outstanding concentration, sweet tannin and a long finish. A sleeper of the vintage, it is a beautiful effort from this challenging vintage. Moreover, it will evolve for 15 or more years.

A modern approach, with roasted vanilla bean and anise notes leading the way for plum sauce and warm currant confiture flavors. A little firm wood still shows on the finish, but good material here.

The palate is medium-bodied with a dry, quite savoury entry, powdery and slightly edgy tannins. The fruit appears to be fading although the secondary flavours and compensating with touches of Chinese 5-spice, orange zest, dried blood and sandalwood. Classic old skool St-Julien towards the finish that has moderate length."

As Belgrave improves each year, it reveals a character that is close to the elegance and style of Saint-Julien, right next door. Chateau Belgrave is situated in Haut Medoc , just west of Beychevelle in St Julien . It is also next door to Chateau Lagrange , which is also in St. Julien. Just a few meters further and it could have been in St. Julien. This 2010, while dense, is balanced, and its rich blackberry flavor is already integrating into its firm tannins. This should age well for the medium term.

After several listless performances from this superb terroir near Cheval Blanc and the Pomerol border, La Dominique's 2006 exhibits a dense purple color and a sweet nose of licorice, nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), raspberry, and kirsch. Full, with a certain flamboyance, ripe tannins, and a layered, long finish, this is a terrific La Dominique to drink over the next 12-14 years.

Full ruby-red. Aromas of black plum, molten chocolate, mocha and licorice show a slightly liqueur-like aspect. Creamy-sweet and lush, with a generous texture to the black cherry, violet and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes sweet and smoothly tannic but with good backbone. This is the first vintage to be vinified by Jean-Luc Thunevin.

Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. The 2006 Haut Batailley is a wine that I have always appreciated and at ten years of age, I have no reason to change that view. It has a such a lively and vivacious bouquet, especially when compared to the sultrier (if ultimately superior 2005 Haut-Batailley). The palate is underpinned by very fine tannin, the acidity quite noticeable but simply lending freshness and tension. There is a sense of this being a Pauillac that is tightly coiled and there is a lot of energy on the finish. This is a great success for the vintage, but if you can wait another couple of years, it should manifest more intriguing secondary notes and turn into a more interesting Pauillac. Tasted July 2016.

blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a surprisingly opulent, flamboyant, fleshy, soft crowd-pleaser displaying abundant amounts of smoked herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, espresso roast, chocolate, and toast. Full-bodied with superb concentration as well as a beautifully textured mouthfeel, this 2006 should drink well for 10-15+ years. Like all of the Neipperg estates, this wine's capsule has a clever anti-fraud device, which I think will be increasingly employed by many French estates.This nearly 30-acre estate, which was purchased several years ago by Stephan von Neipperg (owner of Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte), performed exceptionally well in 2006.

This vintage has already started to express its personality but it will need few more years to show all its potential and developing as it does ever more complex flavours to give increasing pleasure.

Without much fanfare, Leoville-Barton continues to turn out textbook Medocs of great style, aging potential, and richness. Of utmost interest, these wines are priced among the most sensible of all the finest classified growths. No doubt the proprietor, Anthony Barton, has a healthy ego, but it is not reflected in his pro-consumer pricing policy. In the last three difficult vintages, Leoville-Barton has produced one of the most successful 1991s, a delicious 1992, and an authoritatively-flavored, powerful yet elegant 1993. The latter wine is potentially the best Leoville-Barton of the last three years. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent purity, a classic nose of cedar, cassis, spice, and oak, and admirable concentration, this beautifully balanced, rich, stylish wine requires 4-6 years of cellaring; it will keep for two decades. Impressive!

One of the best efforts from this estate since the 1982, this wine remains fairly priced. Ripe, heady and rich, this wine will probably benefit from 2-5 years of cellaring despite its precociousness and keep for two decades.

Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. The Haut Bages Liberal has a classic, graphite-led Pauillac nose with fine definition, although it is a little closed at the moment. This charming, full-bodied 1999 is a sleeper of the vintage. It reveals beautiful, sweet fruit redolent with notes of raspberries, black currants, and spicy wood. The wine is soft, velvety-textured, yet concentrated, with good delineation. It is a strong effort in 1999. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2013.

Known in the 14th century under the name of "La Salle de Poujeaux", Château Poujeaux has belonged to the Theil family since 1921. Jo Gryn of Gault- Millau magazine describes the wine as follows: "An authentic aristocrat among the great wines of the Médoc, a great growth disguised as a Cru Bourgeois". The château has long had an excellent reputation based on its virtual obsession with quality. Poujeaux is always deep in colour, with a subtle bouquet and soft, silky tannin that is never aggressive even when the wine is young. Château Poujeaux is powerful, elegant, charming and well-balanced. The Theil family's policy is trying to always to improve their wine and to do justice to the estate's outstanding terroir. There is every reason to believe that this excellent estate is headed for an even brighter future

The 2010 Pintia had already been bottled when I tasted it, although not released. The bouquet is very Bordeaux-like with black rather than red fruit, fine minerality and touches of graphite and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with plump, rounded tannins, a firm structure and great precision on the finish. This is what you might call a ""classic"" Pintia that already demonstrates great breeding and sophistication toward the finish.

The 2010 release of Pintia is, by quite a long chalk, my favourite vintage of this wine since its inception in 2001. The edginess and aggression of past vintages has melted away in this honed, tame wine. The wildness is still there, of course - it is what typifies the greatest wines in the Toro region, but the tannins and finish on this sensational wine are smooth, moreish and inviting. I never thought I would write the word 'suave' about Pintia, but this great red is starting to resemble its noble relations in Ribera thanks to the finesse found in the layers of dark, brooding fruit on the palate. With no rusticity in evidence and yet plenty of ageing potential and exceptional build quality this is a wine that I cannot recommend enough. (drink 2016 - 2026)

A very rich and sweet style of Margaux, but the broad, dusty, building tannins call for some cellaring. Boasts excellent length for a wine from this chateau.

Sumptuous cassis and blackberry nose, with a good deal of new oak. Sleek, elegant, poised, with great intensity and purity of fruit. There's spice and vigour on the mid-palate, but it's taut, tightly wound, and not very expressive now. The firm tannins contribute to a very long, chewy finish. Evidently needs time.

Proprietor Alexandre Bonnie has produced brilliant white and red wines at this estate's NASA space age-looking winemaking facility. I remember these wines from the early days of The Wine Advocate, and they were undrinkable swill. That is certainly not the case today. This is classic Pessac-Leognan with leafy tobacco, smoky red and black currant, forest floor, cedar, and graphite notes. It is a medium-bodied wine of impeccable purity, texture, and balance.

Another tightly knit wine, despite the fact it is made from 100% Merlot and was showing an opulent, flamboyant character from barrel, this wine now displays excellent density, sweet black cherry fruit intermixed with pain grille, hints of crushed rock, and a distinct earthiness. There is plenty of density, but the wine exhibits relatively high tannins in the finish and seems to be going through an extremely closed state. Give it 3-4 years and drink it over the following 15.

The 2012 Fleur de Boüard (in bottle) offers up copious quantities of dark raspberry, blueberries and spring flowers. It has soft velvety tannins, medium to full body, and a very sexy, lush mouthfeel. This is a gorgeous opaque, ruby/purple Lalande de Pomerol that no one will be able to resist. Drink it over the next decade.

The 2012 Fleur de Boüard, from Hubert de Boüard property in Lalande de Pomerol, is an attractive, open-knit wine that will please readers with its inviting personality. Sweet dark cherries, smoke, licorice, game and savory herb nuances add complexity, but it is the wine giving nature that makes it impossible to resist.

This is extremely floral and flamboyant on the nose for the vintage. Medium to full body, good fruit and a fresh, firm finish. Nicely done. Drink or hold.

The opaque purple-hued 2012 Lafon Rochet reveals plenty of incense, blueberry, black raspberry and spring flower notes intermixed with a hint of forest floor. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it is a complete wine from beginning to end. It may tighten up once it's in bottle, but this wine has 15 or more years of cellaring potential.

This superb effort is a major sleeper of the vintage. Made from a final blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, it boasts 13.5% natural alcohol and was made by Basile Tesseron, whose family owns this chateau as well as the well-known Pontet Canet. Like his uncle Alfred, Basile has moved to biodynamic farming.

A very soft, consumer-friendly style for a St.-Estèphe, Lafon-Rochet’s 2012 has a dark ruby/purple color, plum, black cherry and cassis fruit, medium body, and a rather superficial and shallow aftertaste. It has its charm and endearing qualities, but is not terribly concentrated or profound. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Drink 2015-2023

Wine Advocate (181), February 2009 Since 2002, this great terroir has been fully exploited by the dynamic duo of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt. Following the monumental 2005,a legend in the making, it is hard to get excited about the 2006, even though it is an outstanding effort. While more austere and not as concentrated as its predecessor, it is an impressive blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc displaying a deep, dark ruby color as well as a striking bouquet of powdered rocks/minerals, sweet cherry and plum-like fruit, and hints of Christmas fruitcake and spice box. It is an elegant, medium-bodied, moderately tannic, pure effort possessing outstanding density. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 15-20 years.

the 2006 Château Larcis Ducasse is maturing nicely, far better than the Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse that I tasted side by side. It has plenty of ripe black cherry, strawberry pastille and creme de cassis on the nose, quite opulent for the vintage and well defined. The palate is medium bodied with fine tannin cloaked in ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit; underlying all of this is a seam of cold stone that imparts freshness and satisfying tension on the finish. This is well worth seeking out and is performing at a much higher level than the 2006 Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarosse.

Another sleeper of the vintage, this under-priced, beautifully made Pauillac exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, licorice, tapenade, and spice box. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannin and low acidity, it is a pure, expressive wine to drink over the next 12-15 years.

Liquid purple, relatively opulent on the nose. Quite deep and trying very hard. Attractive spiciness and no excess of dryness of tannin. Well managed and well balanced. The only reproach one might make is that it is a little mild and low key - but then so is Lafite. Quite a bit of weight. Very vigorous. Very good! Very fine tannins, there in abundance. It's worth remembering that as far as I know none of the merchants who tear round Bordeaux like me tasting wines en primeur taste blind. My note was made, exactly as it appears above (plus typos), on the basis of a sample of whose identity I was entirely ignorant. Drink 2013-20.
