Blended with 85 to 90% Merlot, this wine is made for instant enjoyment as soon as it is delivered from the winery. It is fruity, round and elegant; a streamlined version of its illustrious “parents”, which gives consumers something to drink while they wait for the number of years necessary for the main wine and its majestic second to reach their respective peaks. The vines used to grow No. 3 d’Angélus are cultivated with the same care as those used to make its elders and their fruit is vinified with the same precision. The yields are larger and the wine is aged for a shorter period with no recourse to new wood: only one- or two-year-old barrels are used. No. 3 d’Angélus is an easy-going, attractive wine, which gives its all when very young and can yet benefit from being kept for five to eight years.

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ​(7/2009) : Saturated ruby. Intensely floral, high-pitched aromas of black raspberry, mulberry, violet and rose, lifted by a pungent peppery quality. Spicy dark berry flavors gain flesh and sweetness with air, picking up a smoky mineral quality and a note of candied violet. Finishes juicy and very long, with berry skin and floral notes. 

92 points Wine Enthusiast ​(2/2010) : Somewhat precariously balanced at 15.7% alcohol, this may not turn out to be the most long-lived Shiraz, but it is delicious for current consumption. The tannins are soft and creamy in texture, while the blueberry and black berry fruit is intensely concentrated, tinged with nuances of vanilla, menthol and chocolate. 

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ​ ((JM) 12/2009):  My favorite of the Garden Series is the 2007 Shiraz Lily’s Garden from McLaren Vale. Purple-colored, it has an enticing perfume of balsam wood, lavender, incense, pepper, bacon, and blueberry. With excellent grip and balance, this smooth-textured, savory Shiraz will improve over the next 2-3 years and drink well through 2020.

The Block 6 vineyard dates back to 1892. Over 110 years later four acres still remain, cropping at extremely low levels, the fruit is of extreme quality. The wine is an excellent example of a big, rich & brooding McLaren Shiraz. After basket pressing & fermentation in open top fermenters built in 1896, the wine is matured for over 2 years in new American & Baltic oak producing intense flavour & great longevity. A wine which will reward patience well.

The Block 6 Shiraz comes from centurion vines plated in 1896. The 2006 Block 6 Shiraz has a very deep garnet color going a little brick in the rim and an evolved, earthy / gamey nose with notes of mulberries, dried plums, kirsch and tobacco plus menthol, cinnamon stick, licorice and espresso. Rich and full yet elegantly constructed, it presents a medium level of very fine tannins, crisp acid and a long layered finish. A very fine glass now, it should continue to cellar to 2019+.

A dark, brooding wine of rather large proportions, but put together with aplomb; at the core there is an abundance of sweet fruit, and the structure is dense, tannic and chewy and requires a little time to soften; should reward patience well.

This has an intriguing bouquet (even more so, once I discovered its identity.) The nose is more Rhône-like than Bordeaux, with notes of Provencal herbs, fennel and thyme. The palate is full-bodied, a little sullen on the entry with a stout, much more Bordeaux-like personality than the nose (which may be a one-off.) Tobacco-laced blackberry and cedar-wood, finely balanced towards the finish. Moderate length. Fine. Tasted October 2009.

92 Points Antonio Galloni: Deep red with ruby tinges. Delicately flinty and herbal notes complicate sour red cherry, redcurrant and underbrush aromas. Fresh and juicy but with an almost austere quality to the crisp red berry and minty plum flavors. Finishes long and clean with a mineral nuance. The herbal note disapperars with aeration, so it’s of paramount importance to give this wine plenty of air. Pacenti makes 20,000 bottles a year of this Brunello from 25 to 35 year old vines with roughly 75-80% of the grapes grown in the northern Pellagrilli estate vineyards and the rest from the Piancornello vineyards in the southern reaches Montalcino.

92 Points The Wine Advocate : Boasting contemporary lines and a generously extracted style, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli delivers an approach that will appeal to a wider circle of consumers, far outside hardcore Brunello enthusiasts. The bouquet peels off slowly with rich intensity and dark fruit notes of black cherry, plum, soft spice, tobacco and licorice. You don't get any of the bitter or thorny acidity that can sometimes make Brunello difficult to love, especially in its youth. This wine is appropriate for near or medium-term drinking.

91 Points Wine Enthusiast: This opens with dry underbrush, sun-baked soil and French oak aromas. The palate is equally brooding, its dried black cherry and blackberry fruit brushed with licorice and espresso flavors. Assertive, close-grained tannins leave a firm finish. Drink 2020–2027.

The 2012 Fleur de Boüard (in bottle) offers up copious quantities of dark raspberry, blueberries and spring flowers. It has soft velvety tannins, medium to full body, and a very sexy, lush mouthfeel. This is a gorgeous opaque, ruby/purple Lalande de Pomerol that no one will be able to resist. Drink it over the next decade.

The 2012 Fleur de Boüard, from Hubert de Boüard property in Lalande de Pomerol, is an attractive, open-knit wine that will please readers with its inviting personality. Sweet dark cherries, smoke, licorice, game and savory herb nuances add complexity, but it is the wine giving nature that makes it impossible to resist.

Did Lord Byron give this name to the château, swearing that there was nothing like it for "chasser le spleen" (getting rid of the blues)? Or was it Charles Baudelaire, who is said to have come to Moulis in the 1860s because the artist Odilon Redon, who illustrated Les Fleurs du Mal, lived near the estate? Not included in the 1855 Classification, the château was listed as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 1932, and confirmed in 2003 in recognition of its excellent quality. Bernadette Villars took over managing the estate in 1976, followed by her elder daughter, Claire, from 1992 to 1999, and her younger daughter, Céline, since 2000. Chasse-Spleen is an extraordinary wine, it is a shining example of the best its appellation can produce. The wine is deep in colour and has a concentrated, powerful bouquet. From the Villars family, the 2012 Chasse-Spleen has a saturated ruby/purple color and chunky, medium-bodied flavors of cassis, earth and spice, It cuts a somewhat powerful personality across the palate and finishes with moderate tannin. This is a good to very good Mèdoc that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and last for 12-15 years.

The Colonial Estate's two flagship wines come from their own property. The 2006 Exile was sourced from a single 140-year-old vineyard with the blend consisting of 85% Shiraz, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% Grenache. Opaque purple/black in color, it exhibits a captivating perfume of toasty oak, smoke, black pepper, truffle, blueberry pie, and blackberry liqueur. Complex, silky-textured, and nicely balanced, this layered, lengthy wine will continue to improve over the next 4-6 years and have a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2026.

About The Colonial Estate
In the middle 1800's the Lange family settled from Bavaria in the Barossa Valley. The vineyard that they decided to plant was just off the main road of Nuriootpa. The vines have been dry grown since then and the grapes have gone into the great and good of Australia including "Grange". Like "Chateau Haut-Brion" the town has grown up around it and it is now an oasis of a vineyard with houses surrounding it.

Exile is 100% sourced from the "Lange" Vineyard, now a part of The Colonial Estate. The single-vineyard wine is made up of old vine Shiraz with some Mourvedre and Muscadelle. The age of some of these vines date back to the 1800's.

The wine is made in the French fashion – low cropping aided by green harvesting, handpicking into trays, and double-triage on arrival at the winery. The wooden vats – shipped from Cognac in France -appear incongruous in their setting. The wine is picked ripe and, after vinification, poured into pure new French oak.

Ripe blackberry and boysenberry aromas are youthfully brooding and slightly smoky, opening reluctantly to display fruitcake, baking spices and dried flowers. Deep and chewy, with sappy dark berry flavors and slow-building spiciness. Really fills the mouth, but this isn't exactly heavy, or too sweet. Definitely give this densely packed shiraz some age.

Owned and managed by the team at Léoville Poyferré, Moulin Riche always offers excellent value for money and seems likely to do so again in this vintage. Immediately fresh and vibrant, this is a very pure style. With dark berry fruit, some smoky character and crushed stone structure to the tannins and a vein of acidity that gives this an almost-linear tautness, this is quite a grown-up wine in this vintage.

Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. The 2006 Haut Batailley is a wine that I have always appreciated and at ten years of age, I have no reason to change that view. It has a such a lively and vivacious bouquet, especially when compared to the sultrier (if ultimately superior 2005 Haut-Batailley). The palate is underpinned by very fine tannin, the acidity quite noticeable but simply lending freshness and tension. There is a sense of this being a Pauillac that is tightly coiled and there is a lot of energy on the finish. This is a great success for the vintage, but if you can wait another couple of years, it should manifest more intriguing secondary notes and turn into a more interesting Pauillac. Tasted July 2016.

This is very structured with firm tannins and beautiful ripe tannins that are coated with a tiny amount of new wood. Full yet refined. Beautiful structure.

 The 2009 Barolo Arborina offers up freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berries and cloves. In this vintage, the Arborina shows more energy and drive than the Giachini, but a touch less overall sensuality and finesse. The higher percentage of sand in this vineyard gives the Arborina its characteristic high-toned aromatics. Firm, but nicely integrated tannins support the expressive, floral-infused finish. 

Extremely fragrant, particularly for an Arborina, expressive sweet summer berry fruits with notes of earth and stone, underpinned by a solid 
tannic framework. Rich, powerful but balanced. A west-to-south-west clay and sand-dominated vineyard. The wine is fermented and aged 
in the same way as the Giachini; short maceration in steel tanks followed by malolactic and ageing in 50% new oak for 24 months, yet this 
is so very different in style; often broader, more muscular.

The Corino brothers are the rising stars of Piedmont. Their wines are beautiful examples of La Morra Barolos. Perfumed, subtle and elegant with the balancing acidity and fine tannin that make them so complete. Giuliano emphasises: “Barolo doesn’t have to just be about power.’’ A tasting of some beautifully refined and fresh 1991s, over a decade on, would seem to full justify this statement. As of the 2004 vintage the estate has been split in two, Giuliano will produce wines from Arborina, Giachini and will continue to make a Vecchie Vigne. Renato, who has set up his own estate, will produce Rocche, Arborina and some Vecchie Vigne. The Giovanni Corino wines continue to remain in a beautiful floral, red fruited, elegant style.

91 Points Wine Advocate: Traditionally brought up with no concessions to modern winemaking, although it exhibits a touch of vanillin, indicating that some of the Syrah may have been aged in new oak, it is a youthful black/purple-colored wine with elegance, dense, full-bodied power, blackberry, cassis, kirsch and loamy soil notes intermixed with lavender and spice box. This superb, beautifully textured, pure, slightly structured Vacqueyras will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring, and keep for 10-12 years.

Saturated ruby. Exotic floral aromas of black raspberry and cherry, with a note of pungent herbs in the background. Stains the palate with intense dark berry and floral pastille flavors enlivened by juicy acidity. 94 points Robert Parker (Oct 2006): While the deep plum/ruby/garnet-tinged 2003 Shiraz Command is slightly less nuanced than the 2002, it is just as powerful and full-bodied, offering copious quantities of fruit, glycerin, tannin, and muscle. This chewy, rich offering appears to be on a faster evolutionary track than its 2002 counterpart. Give it another 2-3 years of bottle age, and consume it over the following 12-15. 

94 points Wine Spectator (Aug 2007): Big, ripe and generous. This is a plush mouthful of cherry, spice and mineral flavors that rush on the finish, managing to stay in perfect balance. Has depth and grace. Best from 2009 through 2018. 

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Aug 2006): Saturated ruby. Rich, oak-spicy nose shows liqueur-like boysenberry, candied plum and kirsch aromas, plus a good whack of vanilla. Outsized and thick, with dense, sweet dark berry flavors and an almost viscous texture. And yet this massive wine comes across as energetic and surprisingly elegant. The long, sappy finish features powerful dark berry liqueur flavors that won't quit.

Voerzio's 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo is another terrific example of the year. Striking aromatics give the 2013 much of its lifted personality. The 2012 Château d’Issan, builds on the richness of the second wine and adds more body, structure and density. It has an inky purple color and a stunning nose of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as touches of incense and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and stunningly concentrated, this 2012 is a great success in the vintage, one of the superstars. Moreover, its precociousness suggests it could be drunk in the next 4-5 years or cellared through 2025. I underrated this wine dramatically in my report of April, 2013 (Issue 206).

This is an excellent red now with sweet tobacco, truffles and berries. Full body, velvety tannins and a savory finish. This shows the Issan character of decadence and richness.

As elegant as Serge Hochar himself, the man behind Château Musar, this blend of cabernet sauvignon, carignan and cinsault is lithe yet firm. The fruit feels autumnal, in shades of rust red and ocher spice, and is saturated with a spicy, foresty fragrance. It's delicious now, ready for game birds scented with juniper berries, and should live on for another decade.

Nuanced by cherries and spice, it is quite delicious...The ’00 is the powerhouse bruiser, the most rustic, while the Hochar is the approachable, easier wine. This is the one in the middle, arguably the best balance of fruit and power. On the downside, this is as gamey and funky as the 2000, but the balance is different, the wine seeming fruitier and fleshier, not quite as austere. Depending on your taste, you may find that a good thing, or prefer the more powerful and intellectual 2000. This is still powerful, I hasten to add, with drying notes on the finish, but the fruitiness melds beautifully with the barnyard notes, and it is nicely supported by the tannin rather than overwhelmed. As with the 2000, this should age well, although the 2000 should age longer, and this will be a wine some will love, and some will find has too much barnyard. Personally, I enjoyed it a lot, and was just imagining how it would work with venison. Drink now-2020.

A delicious concoction of red and black fruits, spice box, and earth as well as a silky textured, medium-bodied style emerge from this is an undeniable sleeper of the vintage. The round tannins, delicious fruit and forward character suggest it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.

This rich, medium to full-bodied St.-Julien is among the most concentrated wines of the Medoc. Moderate tannin is sweet and well-integrated. This beauty will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and keep for two decades. Drink 2017 - 2037.

This isn't quite as good as the 2010 and 2009 Ducrus, but it's not far behind: a concentrated, yet very polished St Julien from the lowest yields ever at the château. Sweet and intense, with hauntingly floral aromas, notes of cassis, plums and currant, fresh acidity and rich, yet silky tannins leading to a bright, refreshing finish. Powerful yet restrained, this is a keeper. 15+ years.

One of the best efforts from this estate since the 1982, this wine remains fairly priced. It exhibits ripe blue and black fruits, a dense plum/purple color, good acidity buttressing a remarkably rich, fleshy, sumptuous texture, and oodles of smoky black currant and blueberry fruit. Ripe, heady and rich, this wine will probably benefit from 2-5 years of cellaring despite its precociousness and keep for two decades.

Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. The Haut Bages Liberal has a classic, graphite-led Pauillac nose with fine definition, although it is a little closed at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied and quite caressing. There are hints of cranberry, blackberry and a touch of soy, with a refined finish. What a lovely Pauillac. Tasted November 2012.
