The combination of explosive ripe fruit, richness and finesse is utterly breathtaking. The warmth of the vintage comes through in the wine's generosity, yet there are no suggestions whatsoever of over- ripeness. This is a magnificent Montevetrano. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.

The 2007 Montevetrano suggests a more prominent presence of Cabernet Sauvignon, aromatically speaking, compared to the other wines in this mini retrospective. The percentage of grapes used is the same but this impression is reinforced by the warmth of the summer growing season and the exuberance of the fruit. Blackberry aromas are followed by spice, leather and tar. There are subtle notes of balsam herb and green peppercorn as well. The wine is structured and firm but not astringent. The tannins are softly integrated and fine in texture.

Azelia's 2012 Barolo is fresh, floral and nicely lifted in the glass. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherries, spices, mint and rose petal lift from the glass in the 2012 Barolo. An excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years, Azelia's straight Barolo is all about balance and understated harmony. The style is gracious, perfumed and weightless, with pretty saline notes that give the wine its sense of proportion. This is one of the best straight 2012 Barolos I tasted. Fruit sources are 70% Serralunga and 30% Castiglione Falletto. The 2012 spent two and a half years in cask. Hail was an issue in Bricco Voghera, so Azelia did not produce a Riserva. All the best fruit went into the straight Barolo.

The 2009 Barolo Arborina offers up freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berries and cloves. In this vintage, the Arborina shows more energy and drive than the Giachini, but a touch less overall sensuality and finesse. The higher percentage of sand in this vineyard gives the Arborina its characteristic high-toned aromatics. Firm, but nicely integrated tannins support the expressive, floral-infused finish.
Extremely fragrant, particularly for an Arborina, expressive sweet summer berry fruits with notes of earth and stone, underpinned by a solid
tannic framework. Rich, powerful but balanced. A west-to-south-west clay and sand-dominated vineyard. The wine is fermented and aged
in the same way as the Giachini; short maceration in steel tanks followed by malolactic and ageing in 50% new oak for 24 months, yet this
is so very different in style; often broader, more muscular.
The Corino brothers are the rising stars of Piedmont. Their wines are beautiful examples of La Morra Barolos. Perfumed, subtle and elegant with the balancing acidity and fine tannin that make them so complete. Giuliano emphasises: “Barolo doesn’t have to just be about power.’’ A tasting of some beautifully refined and fresh 1991s, over a decade on, would seem to full justify this statement. As of the 2004 vintage the estate has been split in two, Giuliano will produce wines from Arborina, Giachini and will continue to make a Vecchie Vigne. Renato, who has set up his own estate, will produce Rocche, Arborina and some Vecchie Vigne. The Giovanni Corino wines continue to remain in a beautiful floral, red fruited, elegant style.

A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc from this well-situated vineyard on the plateau of Pomerol, which is owned by Chantal Lebreton, this wine has 13.5% alcohol, somewhat low in this vintage, but it displays plenty of kirsch, sweet cherries and red currants along with some sandy/loamy soil and roasted herb notes in a very sexy, up-front, lush, medium to full-bodied style.

The Block 6 vineyard dates back to 1892. Over 110 years later four acres still remain, cropping at extremely low levels, the fruit is of extreme quality. The wine is an excellent example of a big, rich & brooding McLaren Shiraz. After basket pressing & fermentation in open top fermenters built in 1896, the wine is matured for over 2 years in new American & Baltic oak producing intense flavour & great longevity. A wine which will reward patience well.
Luca d'Attoma is a highly respected Tuscan wine consultant, employers have included Azienda Agricola Le Macchiole in Bolgheri and Tua Rita, who, along with wife Elena Celli, eventually realised a dream to produce his own wine. Luca and Elena are the Duemani 'two hands' that run the estate. They first identified a wonderful site in the north Bolgheri hills in the mid nineties. The purchase 7 ha of land and set about preparing the soils for Biodynamic viticulture. This took seven years. The first vines were planted in 2001 and already, by the 2008 vintage, they have started to make some outstanding wines. The structure of the soil here is remarkable for its predominance of clay and stone – the resulting low soil fertility leading to greater character and complexity in the vines fruit. After an examination of the property and its unique position in the contour of a west-facing amphitheatre there emerged the sites of three distinct vineyards. The vineyard at the highest altitude and with the richest soil is the site of their Cabernet Franc vines. Another lower vineyard continues with the same varietal and then evolves into rows of Merlot vines. The third and smallest vineyard, notably stony and arid, is the 'heart' of the estate and is planted to 7000 vines of alberello-trained Syrah. From the very beginning Duemani have followed the principles of biodynamic farming and since the 2004 harvest their estate's production.

The 2010 Valpolicella Superiore is a utterly fascinating wine from Dal Forno in this vintage. Composed from 70% Corvina and Corvina Grossa, 20% Rondinella, 5% Croatina, 5% Oseleta, the selected grapes are then placed in plastic plateaux and are left to rest for 45 days in large open rooms, where an innovative ventilation system helps maintain an elevated and thorough air flow. After the racking process, the Valpolicella rests for a few days in stainless steel tanks and subsequently is placed in new barriques to mature for 36 long months. The result is a wine which displays a pitch dark, inky color, followed by complex aromatics of ripe black currants, black cherries, mission figs woven together with espresso, grilled herbs, bittersweet chocolate, graphite and some earthy loam and straw characteristics all taking shape in this seductive Valpolicella. On this palate this is full-bodied with beautifully polished tannins and remarkable overall structure and balance, with impressive minerality at it core. It all comes together beautifully on the long, expansive finish which lingers on and on. It seems as if this wine continues to improve in quality each vintage, and the 2010 is the most compelling Valpolicella I have ever tasted from the estate. The fullness and generosity here is absolutely amazing. The 2011 Sammarco is one of the protagonists of this vintage. In fact, I think Sammarco represents the hot 2011 growing season better than any other wine from the Chianti Classico area. The bend this year is 94% Sangiovese with 6% Merlot (the breakdown between the two grapes is usually 90-10) and the wine is fermented with ambient yeasts. The bouquet is beautifully redolent of dark berry fruit, soft spice, licorice and cola. The wine's overall elegance and length are both impressive.

The 2011 Sammarco is so youthful it almost tastes like a barrel sample! Dark, rich and inviting, the 2011 possesses notable concentration and depth, with round yet powerful tannins and a surprising level of freshness for the year. A host of black cherry, graphite, smoke, plum and lavender notes accompany the powerful finish. It will be quite some time before the 2011 is ready to drink, but there is plenty to look forward to.

Viticulture: Harvested in the first two weeks of October. Vinification: Traditional-style, floating cap fermentation for 15/20 days. These estate-grown grapes are harvested from 60/70-year-old vines with low yields. Aging: The wine is then matured in French oak for approximately 18 months. Notes: The vineyard is named so because its' shape is that of a shield. The Italian soccer championship is also called the Scudetto.
Wine Advocate (Galloni): Proprietor Mauro Mascarello makes some of the most compelling, traditional wines in Piedmont. Mascarello’s signature Barolo, Monprivato, rarely shows well when young, yet it has a proven ability to transform magically in the bottle, something I have witnessed first-hand with more vintages than I can remember. The irony is that by the time the wines start showing well they are long gone from the market or have appreciated dramatically in price.

As elegant as Serge Hochar himself, the man behind Château Musar, this blend of cabernet sauvignon, carignan and cinsault is lithe yet firm. The fruit feels autumnal, in shades of rust red and ocher spice, and is saturated with a spicy, foresty fragrance. It's delicious now, ready for game birds scented with juniper berries, and should live on for another decade.

Nuanced by cherries and spice, it is quite delicious...The ’00 is the powerhouse bruiser, the most rustic, while the Hochar is the approachable, easier wine. This is the one in the middle, arguably the best balance of fruit and power. On the downside, this is as gamey and funky as the 2000, but the balance is different, the wine seeming fruitier and fleshier, not quite as austere. Depending on your taste, you may find that a good thing, or prefer the more powerful and intellectual 2000. This is still powerful, I hasten to add, with drying notes on the finish, but the fruitiness melds beautifully with the barnyard notes, and it is nicely supported by the tannin rather than overwhelmed. As with the 2000, this should age well, although the 2000 should age longer, and this will be a wine some will love, and some will find has too much barnyard. Personally, I enjoyed it a lot, and was just imagining how it would work with venison. Drink now-2020.

Next to most of the other wines in the lineup, the 2012 Fontalloro is floral, perfumed, fresh and vibrant, with gorgeous aromatic lift, silky tannins and lovely overall balance. Fontalloro often opens up before Rancia, as is the case today, but the 2012 also possesses more than enough depth to drink well for a number of years. Still, the sexy, radiant finish makes me think most bottles won't be around to make old bones. Put simply, the 2012 Fontalloro is an arrestingly beautiful, showy wine built to please. And please it does.

The 2012 Fontalloro (100% Sangiovese) is a stunning expression and delivers the high quality we have come to expect of this celebrated IGT Toscana wine in a less important vintage. Careful work has been done here to ensure the high quality of fruit. The Fontalloro vineyard is located on the border of the Chianti Classico and the Chianti Colli Senesi appellations. Many have called upon Fèlsina to change the wine's status to Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, but technically it can't be because of much of the vineyard is located outside the denomination limits. The bouquet is soft and rich with dark fruit and spice. In the mouth, Fontalloro reveals integrated tannins and acidity. (ML)

This is first rate and one of the better young examples of this wine that I have had.

Opaque purple-colored, the nose is reticent but gives up aromas of meat, bacon, game, truffles, blueberry, and blackberry. Firm, layered, and complex, this beautifully rendered Shiraz demands a decade of cellaring. It will be superb from 2018 to 2036. d'Arenberg has been owned and operated by the Osborn family since its inception in 1912. The portfolio, with a focus on the Rhone varieties, is wide ranging and value-oriented from top to bottom. The winery produces a bevy of value priced reds and whites that were reviewed in Issue 178. They should not be overlooked. At the higher end of the portfolio there is one white wine on which to report.

The 2013 Perlato del Bosco is a pure Sangiovese from a vineyard located just beyond the property's main house. This is Tua Rita's biggest seller when it comes to the USA market and with good reason. It shows a unique identity with bright berry nuances backed by tangy spice, candied orange peel and blue flower. I'm also told that this is the most difficult wine to make. Sangiovese is a difficult grape to manage and special root stocks (33-19) were selected to delay ripening in order to produce smaller and more flavorful clusters. This in itself is a risky proposition because the chances of bad weather increase the longer you wait before harvest. The wine sees eight months in neutral barrique. The bouquet shows a floral component with rose petal and lavender. In the mouth, it offers amazing potential and fullness. This is an amazing value-buy.

This is pure sangiovese that builds on the palate with hazelnuts, orange peel and thyme. Full-bodied, yet racy and beautiful. Very balanced and impressive. Drink now.

The 2013 Perlato del Bosco is wonderfully finessed in the glass, with silky tannins and expressive aromatics that give the wine its sense of polish. Sweet red berries, mint, cinnamon and wild flowers add nuance on the rich, expansive finish. This is a classic example of Suvereto Sangiovese, where the warm, dry weather yields ample, generous wines. There is plenty to like here.
