The 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo is one of the best values in La Spinetta's lineup. The darker side of Nebbiolo comes through in this powerful, deep wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, spice, new leather and a kiss of French oak hit the explosive finish. Frankly, this is better than many Barbarescos readers will come across. Most of the fruit for the Langhe Nebbiolo comes from Starderi, in Neive.
Winemaker Notes: Typical light red of Nebbiolo with aromas of dried rose petals and dark fruits such as plums and blueberry. Full bodied, chewy and rich with dusty tannins and a juicy yet elegant finish.
The Rivetti brothers of La Spinetta have revolutionized the conception of long-ageing and gruesomely tannic Piedmont wines. Their range of Barolo, Barbarescos and Barberas are powerful yet forward and fruity. The modern style of their wines certainly makes Nebbiolos from the northwest corner of Italy much more approachable when young.

Drink this sleeper of the vintage over the next decade.

Proprietor Alexandre Bonnie has produced brilliant white and red wines at this estate's NASA space age-looking winemaking facility. I remember these wines from the early days of The Wine Advocate, and they were undrinkable swill. That is certainly not the case today. This is classic Pessac-Leognan with leafy tobacco, smoky red and black currant, forest floor, cedar, and graphite notes. It is a medium-bodied wine of impeccable purity, texture, and balance.

I reported on the current release, the 2001 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, previously but underrated it slightly. This cuvee is sourced from a single plot called La Plana planted at over 1500 feet of elevation. It is made up of 93% Tempranillo and 7% Mazuelo chosen for its acidity. The wine is aged for 10 months in new American oak followed by 21 months in seasoned oak. It is then held in bottle for 3-4 years prior to release. Deeply colored, spicy, elegant and complex, the wine has great volume and grip as well as exceptional length. It can be approached now but will easily have a 30 year lifespan.

The Clos René, located in the Pomerol appellation, has belonged to the Garde family for more than a century. Jean-Marie Garde currently runs this 18-hectare vineyard planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec. The domain is largely under-valued, considering the quality and regularity of its cuvées. The wines of Clos René are well made, in a classical and elegant style and with a wonderful aging ability, while being reasonable priced.

No other wine I tasted among the new releases in Montalcino achieves this unique level of aromatic finesse and distinction. The fruit tones are less emphatic and include bright cherry and red currant. In the mouth, the wine's compressed texture is accented by fennel seed and licorice. the 2009 vintage had more power and heat, but this version shows elegant restraint. 93+ (ML)

Beautiful and bold, the 2013 Guidalberto is one of the best editions of this wine ever made. It shows great energy and momentum with dark fruit, spice, tobacco and black truffle that come together with impeccable unity. I love the heft and power that supports this wine at the back. Its tannic structure is firm but velvety and will continue to soften as the wine evolves over the next few years. I would suggest holding onto this bottle for three to four more years before popping the cork.

The 2014 Hazana Vinas Viejas is simply one of the greatest values in Rioja that money can buy. A blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, this collaboration between importer Eric Solomon and the owner and winemaker has produced an absolutely amazing Rioja from 45- to 70-year-old unirrigated, head-pruned vines. Loads of lead pencil shavings, black and red currants, licorice and tobacco leaf all jump from the glass of this dense, ruby/purple wine. Soft tannins, medium to full body and fabulous intensity, make for a sensational Rioja to drink over the next 5-7 years.

Vertical in style and quite structured, the 2012 could use another few years in bottle to fully come together, which will also help the chewy tannins to integrate a bit more fully. Roc des Cambes is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec that spend 18 months in 100% new French oak.

Interesting comparing the Roc des Cambes with the Tertre-Roteboeuf, for here there is a little more drive and intensity on the nose, more volume emanating from the glass with pomegranate and cranberry scents intermingling with fresh gravel notes. The palate is soft and sensual on the entry with layers of fleshy red berry fruit. The tannins have a Burgundy-like finesse and there is a lovely touch of Schezhuan pepper numbing the tip of the tongue on the finish. This will be a fascinating Roc des Cambes.

The 2013 La Grola represents a blend of 90% Corvina Veronese and 10% Oseleta. Past editions saw a small part Syrah but this is no longer the case. The wine's appearance is rich and deeply saturated with an inky black color. The bouquet revs up slowly with black prune and plum followed by spice, tar, road paving and cured meat. The effect is extra thick and dense. In the mouth, La Grola displays syrupy richness with both savory and slightly sweet mahogany spice. The wine rests in once-used barrique for 16 months.

As Belgrave improves each year, it reveals a character that is close to the elegance and style of Saint-Julien, right next door. Chateau Belgrave is situated in Haut Medoc , just west of Beychevelle in St Julien . It is also next door to Chateau Lagrange , which is also in St. Julien. Just a few meters further and it could have been in St. Julien. This 2010, while dense, is balanced, and its rich blackberry flavor is already integrating into its firm tannins. This should age well for the medium term.

The 2014 is certainly a few notches above the 2012 overall, and that wine is surely superb. Dark ruby in color, with soaring aromas of dark fruits, leather, and hints of forest floor and mushrooms. Incredibly complex already, but with so much more in reserve. Long, silky and elegant on the palate, with layers of delicious fruit (still primary of course but already hard to resist), and a what must be a 10 minutes finish. Tannins are round and well integrated, with no new oak treatment, and once again a respectable 13% alcohol. Great, refreshing acidity and wonderful structure that are the hallmarks of this superb vintage in Bordeaux. A real classic and a must buy!

Perhaps no further ink needs to be spilt on Two Hands Zippy's Block Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz 2007. In addition to Parker et al who awarded WA93, Josh Raynolds and James Halliday commented the wine as follows:
‘Bright purple. Complex, pungent aromas of raspberry, blackberry, potpourri and incense, with a suave mineral note adding vibrancy. Sweet, minerally and densely packed, with terrific sappy vivacity to the flavors of raspberry and cherry preserves and minerals. With air, the spiciness gained strength and sexy floral notes emerged. Finishes with impressive breadth, fully ripe, gentle tannins and superb length.’ Some 94 points were awarded from Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, August 2009.
‘More life here, with some red fruit providing lift to the concentrated fruitcake and chocolate beneath; the oak and fruit work in tandem and provide a rich, but not overwhelming level of interest on the finish; chewy with some nerve to conclude.’ Rating is 92 by James Halliday in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, July 2009. The Zippy's Block Single Vineyard is one of the 6 to 7 single vineyards of Two hands. In terms of quality, wines from these wines play second fiddle only to the Flagship wines(and Ares Shiraz is the top-top Shiraz ) and is ranked much higher than the super-premium range of Garden Series which is from the best regional fruit. Of course, Zippy's Block is from an exceptional single vineyard site in Marananga. This block is special because it always has an extremely low yield and takes longer to reach full maturity. This wine has a complex bouquet followed by an opulent, elegant, viscous and supple palate. Wine style is true Barossa valley (fruit, power and concentration) clothed in an elegant and softer format. Skin contact duration is 19-day, using old French oak for 18 month. Of cork closure, this wine is 14.7% alc.
Vintage 2007 of the Zippy's Block Single Vineyard Barossa Valley is different to the other vintages in that the wine very best perfumed characters, supple tannin and a warmth that has allowed for early drinking. Consider the recommended drink wine of 15 to 20 years, this wine is probably more readied to savour now.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Shiraz Bin 128 has a gregarious nose of cherry cordial, baked blackberries and spice cake with hints of chocolate box and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, rich, velvety and open for biz, it has a lovely spicy core and great length. Drink 2017-2024.
