Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Chateau Camensac 2010 has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and cigar box scents that demand coaxing. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, chalky tannins. There are plenty of potent tobacco notes here with a touch of spice on the finish. It is a little introverted at the moment, this should develop nicely with several years in the cellar. Tasted January 2014.

Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and crushed rock nuances flesh out in the 2012 Fontalloro. Next to most of the other wines in the lineup, the 2012 Fontalloro is floral, perfumed, fresh and vibrant, with gorgeous aromatic lift, silky tannins and lovely overall balance. Fontalloro often opens up before Rancia, as is the case today, but the 2012 also possesses more than enough depth to drink well for a number of years. Still, the sexy, radiant finish makes me think most bottles won't be around to make old bones. Put simply, the 2012 Fontalloro is an arrestingly beautiful, showy wine built to please. And please it does.

The 2012 Fontalloro (100% Sangiovese) is a stunning expression and delivers the high quality we have come to expect of this celebrated IGT Toscana wine in a less important vintage. Careful work has been done here to ensure the high quality of fruit. The Fontalloro vineyard is located on the border of the Chianti Classico and the Chianti Colli Senesi appellations. Many have called upon Fèlsina to change the wine's status to Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, but technically it can't be because of much of the vineyard is located outside the denomination limits. The bouquet is soft and rich with dark fruit and spice. In the mouth, Fontalloro reveals integrated tannins and acidity. (ML)

This vineyard holding sits directly above Grand cru Clos de Tart quite high on the slope bordering Bonnes Mares on the southern Chambolle-Musigny border and Clos des Lambrays on the northern border. The resulting wine shows remarkable energy and dimension. A stunning village wine. “(30% whole cluster). Here there is a menthol note sitting atop the slightly riper yet cool aromas of cassis, violet and plum. The palate impression of the medium-bodied flavors isn’t quite as concentrated but it is finer with really lovely delineation to the mineral -inflected, balanced and lingering finish. Recommended. 

About Lignier Michelot:

The Lignier family have deep roots in the village of Morey Saint Denis and own some of the very best vineyard sites in this village, and also in the 2 neighbouring villages Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin. Virgile’s father and grand-father had always produced wine and sold it to negotiants until Virgile started working with his father in the early 1990’s and he decided to sell the wines himself. Now with almost 20 vintages of experience Virgile has moved the domaine to fully organic viticulture and is producing what many believe to be the best wines of this prestigious village. 

In the last few vintages Virgile has modified his winemaking using whole-bunch vinification ranging from 30-100% depending on the vintage and the vineyard and he has also reduced the percentage of new oak for maturation with most wines seeing around 30% making its effect seamless in the final wines. He has also just completed a new winery that now enables him to work with temperature control and to gain a very gentle extraction of tannins for all his wines. This results in wines showing great energy with remarkable perfume and also beautiful fine tannins and very silky structure. They are wines which are often very seductive at a young age which also clearly have the potential for ageing superbly. This very young domaine is now regarded a mong the very best in the Cotes de Nuits.

Lusciously textured with no astringency, it can be consumed now and over the next 10-12 years.

Playing true to type, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is another of the more open wines in this vintage. But that is only in relative terms. Layers of expressive red fruit, crushed flowers and spices flesh out in this radiant Barbaresco. In most vintages the Pora is one of the more accessible of the Riservas when young. The close proximity of the vineyard to the Tanaro River results in a warm microclimate that ripens the fruit earlier than elsewhere. In 2008, though, the Pora packs a serious punch. The coolness of the late harvest comes through in a finish laced with considerable tension and minerality. This is easily one of the very best Poras I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.

One notch down on the intensity ladder is the 2009 Barolo Ciabot Mentin. Less obvious and definitely more flirtatious, this gorgeous wine playfully dangles subtle hints of licorice, dark fruit, anisette and Middle Eastern spice in front of your nose. They morph and transform into something new and unexpected with each swirl of the glass. There’s enough flesh here to keep the wine grounded, but there’s also enough tonic freshness to keep it from feeling heavy.

A beautiful ripeness of fruit here with dried strawberries and sliced mushroom aromas. Full body, with polished and round tannins and a cedar, mahogany and dried berry aftertaste. Needs at least two or three years of bottle age.

Medium red. Less roasted than the Briccotto, offering aromas and flavors of cherry, mocha, coffee and spices. Less fat and full in the mouth but shows more lift and energy. A bit youthfully clenched, but the wine's firm tannic spine and impressive length suggest it will be a beauty with a few years of aging. Despite being situated at high altitude, these are the first Barolo vines Clerico picks. The acidity here is a very healthy 6.3 grams per liter.

A fresh, vibrant red, whose eucalyptus, tea, cherry and leather notes are backed by dense, ripe tannins. Balanced on the firm side, with a coating of dusty tannins on the long finish. Give this some time. Best from 2017 through 2032.

Commune of Monforte d’Alba. Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Balsamic fruitcake and cardamom skin. Fine cherry fruit with a layer of coating tannins. Intense, long and with a hint of vanilla. Quite spectacular and modernist but executed with huge skill.

The Deuxieme Vin of La Petite Eglise is pure Merlot picked on 16th September that is aged in 50% new barrels. It has a refined bouquet with pure blackberry and raspberry with well-integrated creamy new oak that does not impede upon the fruit profile. With time it offers a touch of cedar that is very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive balance and a silky smooth texture. It has some oak to subsume so it will need 3-4 years in bottle, though it does not have the tension or persistency one can find in the 2009 or 2010. Still, this is very fine and probably will be good value. Tasted April 2012.

The second wine of L'Eglise Clinet is better than many châteaux's top wines in 2011. This is extremely fine and aromatic, more open than it often is at such a young age, with sweet fruitcake and red cherries on the palate, filigree tannins and a classy, perfumed finish. It's denser than it seems at first, and should age well. 10+ years.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino bursts from the glass with freshly cut flowers, violets, leather, licorice and black cherries. Firm underlying tannins lend vibrancy to the voluptuous fruit. The Casanova di Neri straight bottling – sometimes referred to as the “white label” – is made from some of the estate’s cooler sites. In 2007 the wine has more depth, fruit and overall harmony than is typically the case. Bright acidity frames the long, polished finish. In short, this is a fabulous wine from Giacomo Neri. Along with the 2006, the 2007 is one the best and most complete vintages I can remember tasting in some time. Most importantly of all, though, it is flat-out delicious. Tasting Note: “Kirsch, black cherry, dark chocolate and cassis all abouund on the nose and palate. This is enticing and very plush with a good cherry and damson fruit core. Granular with ripe tannins and although there is clearly high levels of glycerol and sweetness of fruit it is all managed and held in check. The dollop Malbec gives a black pepper and spicey edge to the wine, the Merolt giving weight and roundness and the Cabernet Sauvignon keeping the structure”.

Series M takes its name from the Malbec and Merlot which predominantly define the style of this wine. Series M is sensuous wine with a firm core structure for aging. Malbec provides its black fruit aromas and fleshy texture, Merlot adds softness and red fruit aromas, and Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure.

About Vilafonte:
Vilafonté is the first American and South African joint wine-making venture within the global wine community. This ground-breaking red wine project is a partnership between a well respected group of 'quality driven' wine specialists from South Africa and the United States. The name, Vilafonté, derives from the primary soil type of the 100 acre estate, whose character forms the foundation of the wines.

Zelma Long is Head Winemaker for the Vilafonté project. Zelma is one of America's best known winemakers. One of the first women to study enology and viticulture at U.C. Davis, she began her winemaking career at Robert Mondavi Winery, rapidly working into the Chief Winemaker position.

Vilafonté's General Manager is Michael Ratcliffe. Mike qualified as a business major before attending the University of Adelaide. Mike is Managing Director of his family estate, Warwick which is recognized as one of South Africa's foremost wine estates.

Phil Freese is head 'wine-grower' and creator of the Vilafonté vineyard which he calls "Different by Design". Phil spent 13 years as Robert Mondavi’s Vice-President of Wine Growing. Phil designed the first Opus One vineyards, and initiated the remote sensing project with NASA that has spawned a new wave of tools for viticulture analysis and quality enhancement.

A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc from this well-situated vineyard on the plateau of Pomerol, which is owned by Chantal Lebreton, this wine has 13.5% alcohol, somewhat low in this vintage, but it displays plenty of kirsch, sweet cherries and red currants along with some sandy/loamy soil and roasted herb notes in a very sexy, up-front, lush, medium to full-bodied style.

Bright, full ruby-red. Sexy, syrah-like aromas of blackberry, violet, smoke, game and underbrush. Densely packed and fine-grained, with lovely inner-mouth floral lift to its crushed berry flavors. A very rich and sweet style of Margaux, but the broad, dusty, building tannins call for some cellaring. Boasts excellent length for a wine from this chateau.

Sumptuous cassis and blackberry nose, with a good deal of new oak. Sleek, elegant, poised, with great intensity and purity of fruit. There's spice and vigour on the mid-palate, but it's taut, tightly wound, and not very expressive now. The firm tannins contribute to a very long, chewy finish. Evidently needs time.

A bright, ripe style, with very fresh crushed plum, raspberry and blackberry fruit wrapped in silky tannins and laced with hints of anise and black tea. The rounded finish has modest grip for mid-term cellaring. Drink now through 2020.

Azelia's 2012 Barolo is fresh, floral and nicely lifted in the glass. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherries, spices, mint and rose petal lift from the glass in the 2012 Barolo. An excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years, Azelia's straight Barolo is all about balance and understated harmony. The style is gracious, perfumed and weightless, with pretty saline notes that give the wine its sense of proportion. This is one of the best straight 2012 Barolos I tasted. Fruit sources are 70% Serralunga and 30% Castiglione Falletto. The 2012 spent two and a half years in cask. Hail was an issue in Bricco Voghera, so Azelia did not produce a Riserva. All the best fruit went into the straight Barolo.

The 2008 Barolo Aeroplanservaj puts on a whole different act. Here, the emphasis is on elegance and finesse. The opulence and massiveness of the wine fits in with the Clerico philosophy, but unlike the Barolo Briccotto its strongest cards are played with a more subtle strategy. The aromas of black fruit and spice are wrapped a bit tighter, and the wine shows some nervous tension in the glass that needs to soften with age. I loved those delicate sprigs of mint and wild flower that somehow emerge from the inner depths of this rock-solid wine. Terrible mudslides in 2009 damaged the Badarina vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba and Clerico did not produce the Aeroplanservaj that year. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.

This is fresh and racy, with a base of granular tannins buoying the cherry, menthol and balsamic notes. Long and spicy, this is balanced on the tannic side. Best from 2016 through 2028.

One of the bigger, more tannic and powerful wines of the vintage, although it is only 14.4% alcohol, which puts it well below some of the blockbusters in the Cotes de Castillon, this wine exhibits wonderfully pure black raspberry, black cherry and graphite notes intermixed with hints of cedar and licorice, in a medium to full-bodied, slightly softer and less extracted style than usual. This is another sleeper of the vintage that should drink nicely for up to a decade.

Geantet-Pansiot 是勃根地近年受追捧的新進酒莊,歷史五十年左右,以 Gevrey Chambertin 為基地,全系列的 Gevrey Chambertin 村莊級、一級園的品質都非常優秀穩定。莊主Vincent Geantet 於 1989 年接手父親留下這座 11公頃的酒廠,兒子 Fabien 自 2006 年起加入協助父親釀酒。

酒莊 唯一一塊一級園Le Poissenot,靠近Clos St-Jacques的上方,鄰接上坡處的La Romanee,Le Poissenot和媲美頂級園的Clos St-Jacques一樣有著高比例石灰的黏土和泥灰質土,酒質均衡精緻且充滿紮實的複雜層次與深度,深受莊主Vincent Geantet的喜愛。果實會經4次篩選,10 度10 天冷浸泡,20-22 天不超過 35 度發酵,沉澱2天後導入橡木桶。其 Bourgogne 到頂級酒 Charmes 皆採30%新桶,12-14個月桶陳後入樽。

Note: from a mix of Brochon vines planted between 1922 and 1961 that average 60+ years of age; in 2010 this has the Les Jeunes Rois fruit in it.

A gorgeously complex and lightly spiced nose serves up notes of violet, plum and plenty of pungent earth that is also reflected by the dense and serious medium-bodied flavors. There is excellent volume and concentration to the mid-palate that possesses impeccable phenolic ripeness, all wrapped in a seductive yet linear finish. This is very Gevrey in character with a brawny yet not overtly rustic mouth feel. Recommended.

The deep ruby colour promises a classic wine of superb quality. The nose backs up that promise with intense aromas of cherry, ripe black fruits, herbs and a slight earthiness. The palate provides intense flavours of black and red fruits, spices, herbs and wildflowers. The wine is well structured, has great acidity which marries perfectly with the ripe tannins. The lingering finish provides a closing offer of rich chocolate at the end. 

Match this with rich beef dishes, venison, game, roasted meats and strong cheese. 

The winery’s attention to detail when making its wines are what makes this wine so good. The hand harvested grapes are fermented in stainless steel vats for four weeks. It is then aged in new and old oak barriques for 12 months followed by a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. 

The Gaja family acquired the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in 1994. It is situated in the south west of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, and comprises of 40 acres of vineyards. The name comes from the church of Santa Restituta which is located on the estate. It has been beautifully restored by the family and it now forms the subject of the wine labels. 

The family has now also obtained a further 25 acres in the north east of the appellation and has developed a state of the art winemaking facility and below ground cellar which reduces the impact on the environment – a subject very close to the family’s heart.

The fullness and generosity here is absolutely amazing. The 2011 Sammarco is one of the protagonists of this vintage. In fact, I think Sammarco represents the hot 2011 growing season better than any other wine from the Chianti Classico area. The bend this year is 94% Sangiovese with 6% Merlot (the breakdown between the two grapes is usually 90-10) and the wine is fermented with ambient yeasts. The bouquet is beautifully redolent of dark berry fruit, soft spice, licorice and cola. The wine's overall elegance and length are both impressive.

The 2011 Sammarco is so youthful it almost tastes like a barrel sample! Dark, rich and inviting, the 2011 possesses notable concentration and depth, with round yet powerful tannins and a surprising level of freshness for the year. A host of black cherry, graphite, smoke, plum and lavender notes accompany the powerful finish. It will be quite some time before the 2011 is ready to drink, but there is plenty to look forward to.

The 2012 Fleur de Boüard (in bottle) offers up copious quantities of dark raspberry, blueberries and spring flowers. It has soft velvety tannins, medium to full body, and a very sexy, lush mouthfeel. This is a gorgeous opaque, ruby/purple Lalande de Pomerol that no one will be able to resist. Drink it over the next decade.

The 2012 Fleur de Boüard, from Hubert de Boüard property in Lalande de Pomerol, is an attractive, open-knit wine that will please readers with its inviting personality. Sweet dark cherries, smoke, licorice, game and savory herb nuances add complexity, but it is the wine giving nature that makes it impossible to resist.

92 Points Antonio Galloni: Deep red with ruby tinges. Delicately flinty and herbal notes complicate sour red cherry, redcurrant and underbrush aromas. Fresh and juicy but with an almost austere quality to the crisp red berry and minty plum flavors. Finishes long and clean with a mineral nuance. The herbal note disapperars with aeration, so it’s of paramount importance to give this wine plenty of air. Pacenti makes 20,000 bottles a year of this Brunello from 25 to 35 year old vines with roughly 75-80% of the grapes grown in the northern Pellagrilli estate vineyards and the rest from the Piancornello vineyards in the southern reaches Montalcino.

92 Points The Wine Advocate : Boasting contemporary lines and a generously extracted style, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli delivers an approach that will appeal to a wider circle of consumers, far outside hardcore Brunello enthusiasts. The bouquet peels off slowly with rich intensity and dark fruit notes of black cherry, plum, soft spice, tobacco and licorice. You don't get any of the bitter or thorny acidity that can sometimes make Brunello difficult to love, especially in its youth. This wine is appropriate for near or medium-term drinking.

91 Points Wine Enthusiast: This opens with dry underbrush, sun-baked soil and French oak aromas. The palate is equally brooding, its dried black cherry and blackberry fruit brushed with licorice and espresso flavors. Assertive, close-grained tannins leave a firm finish. Drink 2020–2027.
