The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is silky, soft and open-knit, especially within the context of what has been the norm at Biondi Santi for the last few decades. Freshly cut flowers, red berries and mint all open up in the glass, but it is the wine's decidedly mid-weight structure that truly stands out. The 2011 is a very rare young Biondi Santi that will drink well pretty much upon release, as shocked as I myself am to write those words. The bright red cherry, raspberry and floral overtones have an almost Nebbiolo-sense of brightness. Drink 2017-2031

Jacopo Biondi Santi was already making wine at Il Greppo when the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Annata was produced. His father, Franco Biondi Santi, would pass away in 2013 at the age of 91. The winemaking approach is unchanged despite the father to son transition. This wine shows extra richness and texture with focused fruit aromas that are graceful but also powerful. There are hints of ripe fruit with dried cherry and prune buried deep within the bouquet. In the mouth, this Brunello shows good structure and acidity with a slightly denser feel compared to past vintages.

The palate is ripe and voluptuous with sensual black cherries, blueberry and layers of creamy oak on the finish. Although it needs to develop more individuality through its bottle evolution, it is undeniably very well-crafted and will please those who love opulent Ribera del Duero wines"

The Deuxieme Vin of La Petite Eglise is pure Merlot picked on 16th September that is aged in 50% new barrels. It has a refined bouquet with pure blackberry and raspberry with well-integrated creamy new oak that does not impede upon the fruit profile. With time it offers a touch of cedar that is very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive balance and a silky smooth texture. It has some oak to subsume so it will need 3-4 years in bottle, though it does not have the tension or persistency one can find in the 2009 or 2010. Still, this is very fine and probably will be good value. Tasted April 2012.

The second wine of L'Eglise Clinet is better than many châteaux's top wines in 2011. This is extremely fine and aromatic, more open than it often is at such a young age, with sweet fruitcake and red cherries on the palate, filigree tannins and a classy, perfumed finish. Beautiful and bold, the 2013 Guidalberto is one of the best editions of this wine ever made. It shows great energy and momentum with dark fruit, spice, tobacco and black truffle that come together with impeccable unity. I love the heft and power that supports this wine at the back. Its tannic structure is firm but velvety and will continue to soften as the wine evolves over the next few years. I would suggest holding onto this bottle for three to four more years before popping the cork.

After several listless performances from this superb terroir near Cheval Blanc and the Pomerol border, La Dominique's 2006 exhibits a dense purple color and a sweet nose of licorice, nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), raspberry, and kirsch. Full, with a certain flamboyance, ripe tannins, and a layered, long finish, this is a terrific La Dominique to drink over the next 12-14 years.

Proprietor Alexandre Bonnie has produced brilliant white and red wines at this estate's NASA space age-looking winemaking facility. I remember these wines from the early days of The Wine Advocate, and they were undrinkable swill. That is certainly not the case today. This is classic Pessac-Leognan with leafy tobacco, smoky red and black currant, forest floor, cedar, and graphite notes. It is a medium-bodied wine of impeccable purity, texture, and balance.

Developed rim on ruby. Scented and full of minerals. Rather straight backed and upright. Lovely sweetness and delicacy with the tannins completely retreated. Not sickly sweet like some of the more made-up Margaux but a great classic claret that is only medium, even quite lightweight and finishes dry. This doesn’t have that much more to give but it is utterly charming.

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate( Oct 2007) : The 2006 Shiraz “Savitar” was aged in 100% new oak, predominantly French. Purple-colored, the aromatics are a bit reticent initially, but soon scents of toasty oak, tar, licorice, scorched earth, and blueberry emerge. This leads to a wine which is more structured and less opulent than its peers. It will evolve for a minimum of 8-10 years and drink well through 2040. As a point of reference, the 2002 Savitar (rated 95) was presented. It is considerably more developed aromatically but still has a significant distance to travel prior to reaching its peak.
93 points Vinous (Sep 2008): Inky violet. Powerful dark berry liqueur and cherry-vanilla on the nose, with sexy floral and incense qualities adding complexity. Broad and juicy, with deeply concentrated blackberry and boysenberry flavors, supple tannins and slow-building anise and sassafras on the back. Generous but focused shiraz with excellent finishing energy and persistence. Still quite primary, but there'd be no crime in drinking this after giving it an hour or so in a decanter.

91 Points Antonio Galloni: Deep ruby-red. Pristine, high-pitched aromas of black fruits. Seriously rich, with powerful acidity and strong alcohol giving shape to the almost candied blackberry, black raspberry and cassis flavors. A bit aggressive on the back end but this is a fruit bomb, from a yield of no more than 35 hectoliters per hectare.
91 Points Robert Parker: The 2009 Barbera d'Alba Cerretta is a huge wine bursting with dark red cherries, plums, sweet herbs, rose petal and all sorts of mineral notes. Smoke, ash and tar develop in the glass. The 2009 Cerretta is an intense, virile Barbera that needs at least a few years in bottle to drop some of its baby fat. The richness and depth are impressive considering this is only the second vintage Conterno has made the wine. Mineral notes develop on the finish, but the Cerretta is ultimately more about fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022.

A lighter-styled, but beautifully crafted, well done 2011, it can be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.

The Block 6 vineyard dates back to 1892. Over 110 years later four acres still remain, cropping at extremely low levels, the fruit is of extreme quality. The wine is an excellent example of a big, rich & brooding McLaren Shiraz. After basket pressing & fermentation in open top fermenters built in 1896, the wine is matured for over 2 years in new American & Baltic oak producing intense flavour & great longevity. A wine which will reward patience well.

The Block 6 Shiraz comes from centurion vines plated in 1896. The 2006 Block 6 Shiraz has a very deep garnet color going a little brick in the rim and an evolved, earthy / gamey nose with notes of mulberries, dried plums, kirsch and tobacco plus menthol, cinnamon stick, licorice and espresso. Rich and full yet elegantly constructed, it presents a medium level of very fine tannins, crisp acid and a long layered finish. A very fine glass now, it should continue to cellar to 2019+.

A dark, brooding wine of rather large proportions, but put together with aplomb; at the core there is an abundance of sweet fruit, and the structure is dense, tannic and chewy and requires a little time to soften; should reward patience well.

93 pts Wine Advocate: The 2005 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from their vineyards in the meander of the Ebro River, where they have some 100 hectares of vineyards. The wine fermented in the original oak vats that are now some 140 years of age. There is no temperature control and malolactic was also in the vat. The wine was transferred to oak barrels where it slowly matured in their deep, humid caves for no less than six years. After this, it was bottled unfiltered after being fined with egg whites. I think the quality gap between the Reserva and Gran Reserva has been getting smaller since the 2001 vintage and this 2005 is nothing short of exceptional. It's clean and complex, with more freshness. The wine is very spicy and with a palate that feels very balanced, livelier than in the past. It has a long finish where the flavors are clean. Easy to drink and very pleasurable. Some 250,000 bottles were produced in 2005.

The 2012 Cotes Catalanes Cuvee Nicolas is an off-the-hook value. Named after Jean-Marc's son and made from 100% Grenache from higher elevation sites in the Aspres region, fermented with 20% stems and aged half in demi-muid, it offers layers of kirsch, underbrush, licorice and serious floral notes in its medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless profile. Getting a big "wow" in the notes and showing fine tannin and serious length, it should be snatched up by savvy readers and consumed over the coming 3-4 years.
**Run by the talented (and fast driving) Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage, from their cellar located just outside of Perpignan (which is being completely renovated), this estate includes vineyards spread throughout the Roussillon, allowing them to make the most of the diverse terroirs and micro-climates. I
