When the Château Angélus philosophy of excellence is applied to a selection of young vines on the estate, No. 3 d’Angélus results. Blended with 85 to 90% Merlot, this wine is made for instant enjoyment as soon as it is delivered from the winery. It is fruity, round and elegant; a streamlined version of its illustrious “parents”, which gives consumers something to drink while they wait for the number of years necessary for the main wine and its majestic second to reach their respective peaks. The vines used to grow No. 3 d’Angélus are cultivated with the same care as those used to make its elders and their fruit is vinified with the same precision. The yields are larger and the wine is aged for a shorter period with no recourse to new wood: only one- or two-year-old barrels are used. No. 3 d’Angélus is an easy-going, attractive wine, which gives its all when very young and can yet benefit from being kept for five to eight years.

Or was it Charles Baudelaire, who is said to have come to Moulis in the 1860s because the artist Odilon Redon, who illustrated Les Fleurs du Mal, lived near the estate? Not included in the 1855 Classification, the château was listed as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 1932, and confirmed in 2003 in recognition of its excellent quality. Bernadette Villars took over managing the estate in 1976, followed by her elder daughter, Claire, from 1992 to 1999, and her younger daughter, Céline, since 2000. The fullness and generosity here is absolutely amazing. The 2011 Sammarco is one of the protagonists of this vintage. In fact, I think Sammarco represents the hot 2011 growing season better than any other wine from the Chianti Classico area. The bend this year is 94% Sangiovese with 6% Merlot (the breakdown between the two grapes is usually 90-10) and the wine is fermented with ambient yeasts. The bouquet is beautifully redolent of dark berry fruit, soft spice, licorice and cola. The wine's overall elegance and length are both impressive.

The 2011 Sammarco is so youthful it almost tastes like a barrel sample! Dark, rich and inviting, the 2011 possesses notable concentration and depth, with round yet powerful tannins and a surprising level of freshness for the year. A host of black cherry, graphite, smoke, plum and lavender notes accompany the powerful finish. It will be quite some time before the 2011 is ready to drink, but there is plenty to look forward to.

The blend for the 2014 Sena was 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Carmenere, 11% Malbec, 8% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot from their stony soils. The different grapes are carefully fermented separately and with different regimes of maceration and extraction but always looking for elegance within the natural power of the zone. The final blend was transferred to French oak barrels, 67% of them new (a percentage that seems to be slowly going down), for the elevage of 22 months. This time, some 5% of the volume carried out its aging in new Stockinger foudres. This is very much in line with the 2013 and the direction set by that cool year. The wine is very harmonious, elegant within the house style. Another superb vintage of Sena. This should age effortlessly in bottle. 60,000 bottles were filled in March 2016.

Domaine Leflaive produces magnificent wines, the hallmark of which is loyalty to and typicity of individual terroir. The wines have personality and extraordinary purity – perfect ambassadors for the domaine's belief in biodynamic viticulture. At the heart of the biodynamic philosophy is the individual treatment of vines by plant-based compounds, according to a strict timetable, governed by the lunar cycle. Pesticides and chemicals have long been confined to the past under the late Anne-Claude stewardship, she started biodynamic experiments in the early nineties, and the practices were fully endorsed from 1997. The prime motivation initially was concern about the sustainability of the land but the rewards have extended far beyond the vineyards, which have thrived, to very obvious improvements in quality in the finished wines – a welcome and unexpected bonus.

When that happens, the straight Barbaresco is often an overachiever. That is certainly the case here, as the 2012 offers outstanding quality for the money, with plenty of potential for the future. The Rossignols are large land-owners in Gevrey enabling them to retain the fruit only from their oldest vines, the rest being sold anonymously. The result is a wine close to premier cru quality, fermented with 30% whole bunches and aged in 10% new oak.
An open nose of alluring black cherries, cream and flower petals gives way to a finely structured palate. The style is rich and deep, with succulent fruit nicely balanced by complex secondary aromas and flavours and an earthiness characteristic of this village. One of the best Gevrey Chambertin village level wines available, and as such this is great value.

One notch down on the intensity ladder is the 2009 Barolo Ciabot Mentin. Less obvious and definitely more flirtatious, this gorgeous wine playfully dangles subtle hints of licorice, dark fruit, anisette and Middle Eastern spice in front of your nose. They morph and transform into something new and unexpected with each swirl of the glass. There’s enough flesh here to keep the wine grounded, but there’s also enough tonic freshness to keep it from feeling heavy.

Medium red. Less roasted than the Briccotto, offering aromas and flavors of cherry, mocha, coffee and spices. Less fat and full in the mouth but shows more lift and energy. A bit youthfully clenched, but the wine's firm tannic spine and impressive length suggest it will be a beauty with a few years of aging. Despite being situated at high altitude, these are the first Barolo vines Clerico picks. The acidity here is a very healthy 6.3 grams per liter.

The 2004 Chateau Musar is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. This is a rather civilized, laid back Musar... Its balance, combining the nice fruit, elegant mid-palate, persistent finish and backbone, gives it a tightly wound, precise and focused demeanor. The tannins are not completely integrated, but not overly hard. They provided some welcome grip and vibrancy and never overwhelmed the wine. In the long run, they should serve this wine in good stead. Overall, it is an exceptionally graceful, somewhat modern and restrained Musar, bright, with that silky texture I saw in the Hochar reviewed this issue, while adding those layers of concentration. The cherry on top is the intensity of fruit flavor – bursts of delicious and juicy fruit on the finish, admittedly nuanced by some of the gamey notes I see here so often. Call it raspberry flavored, though, because the fruit is delicious. The gamey notes were in fact moderate and, at least for my taste, not an issue. As this rather subtle Musar aired out, I liked it more and more. I’ve had Musars that were bigger, burlier, more rustic and more astringent. Here, the subtle start was unremarkable, but it gathered steam, showed remarkable finesse and then won me over. This will certainly do better with food. Drink now-2021.

There is a floral element of pressed rose petals that appears with delicate intensity at the back. In the mouth, this wine offers power and good structure.

The 2003 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port improved each time I raised it to my nose or mouth. It displays a black color and a salty, graphite-laced nose packed with sweet black fruits that is reminiscent of a stellar vintage of Chateau Latour. With air, notes of molasses, burnt sugar, spices, and jammy plums emanate from the glass. Full-bodied, hugely dense, immensely rich, as well as thick, this behemoth is also amazingly balanced and harmonious. 91 Points Wine Advocate: Traditionally brought up with no concessions to modern winemaking, although it exhibits a touch of vanillin, indicating that some of the Syrah may have been aged in new oak, it is a youthful black/purple-colored wine with elegance, dense, full-bodied power, blackberry, cassis, kirsch and loamy soil notes intermixed with lavender and spice box. This superb, beautifully textured, pure, slightly structured Vacqueyras will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring, and keep for 10-12 years.

Stains the palate with intense dark berry and floral pastille flavors enlivened by juicy acidity. There's a lot going on here, with a big core of yellow apple, white peach and wet straw notes offset by accents of citrus oil and bitter almond. A hint of brioche shows on the finish, but this is decidedly stony in feel at the end. The elements should meld beautifully with cellaring. Best from 2016 through 2026.

The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc incorporates slightly less Grenache Blanc than normal and has more Bourboulenc and Picpoul in the blend. As always, it didn’t go through malolactic fermentation and was raised all in stainless steel. Hitting 13.6% natural alcohol, its medium-gold color is followed by lots of apple, lemon curd and citrus-like fruit characteristics that give way to more spice, toast and minerality with time in the glass. Vibrant, fresh and borderline racy, while not being lean, it’s an outstanding white that will benefit from a year in bottle and have a graceful evolution for another decade or more. As I commented in my recent retrospective article, Clos des Pape is one of the reference point estates for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape.

Bright, full ruby-red. Sexy, syrah-like aromas of blackberry, violet, smoke, game and underbrush. Densely packed and fine-grained, with lovely inner-mouth floral lift to its crushed berry flavors. A very rich and sweet style of Margaux, but the broad, dusty, building tannins call for some cellaring. Boasts excellent length for a wine from this chateau.

Sumptuous cassis and blackberry nose, with a good deal of new oak. Sleek, elegant, poised, with great intensity and purity of fruit. There's spice and vigour on the mid-palate, but it's taut, tightly wound, and not very expressive now. The firm tannins contribute to a very long, chewy finish. Evidently needs time.

A bright, ripe style, with very fresh crushed plum, raspberry and blackberry fruit wrapped in silky tannins and laced with hints of anise and black tea. The rounded finish has modest grip for mid-term cellaring. Drink now through 2020.
