"A steal that I’ve been recommending for a number of years is the 2015 Botani Moscatel Old Vines. Totally dry and made from vines planted in 1946, 1968 and 1975, from the incredibly steep slate and quartz hillsides of Malaga, this is fermented with wild yeasts in stainless steel, where it’s aged and bottled after eight months sur lie. An incredibly gorgeous flowery bouquet alone would be reason to spend the $18.00 for this medium-bodied, super-fragrant and seductive, crisp, elegant wine. The old vines, the beautiful floral notes and stunning, delicate tropical fruits that the Muscat of Alexandria varietal (the oldest clone in the Muscat family) produces, are just something to behold. Not meant for aging, but for drinking in its first year of life, so take advantage of it. For those interested: this is fermented in total stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and bottled early to preserve its incredible aromatics."

Botani Moscatel Old Vines is a truly unique dry white wine, made from Moscatel de Alejandría grapes. It is the product of a rigorous selection process in which only the best Moscatel vines, located on the north-facing mountainside slopes around the town of Almáchar are used. These vineyards are situated on partially decomposed red slate mixed with white quartz. The scant topsoil is punctuated by outcroppings of the bedrock. Because of the steep incline of the vineyards, the grapes are manually harvested into small 10-kilogram boxes, carried to the winery by mules.

The 2011 Lytton Springs has a wonderful burst immediacy to it, backed up by the structure of the year. This isn't the most nuanced Lytton Springs in recent memory. Despite its considerable appeal today, my sense is the 2011 needs a few more years in bottle for all of the elements to fully come together. The blend is 82% Zinfandel, 16% Petite Sirah and 2% Carignane.

The 2009 Barolo Arborina offers up freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berries and cloves. In this vintage, the Arborina shows more energy and drive than the Giachini, but a touch less overall sensuality and finesse. The higher percentage of sand in this vineyard gives the Arborina its characteristic high-toned aromatics. Firm, but nicely integrated tannins support the expressive, floral-infused finish.
Extremely fragrant, particularly for an Arborina, expressive sweet summer berry fruits with notes of earth and stone, underpinned by a solid
tannic framework. Rich, powerful but balanced. A west-to-south-west clay and sand-dominated vineyard. The wine is fermented and aged
in the same way as the Giachini; short maceration in steel tanks followed by malolactic and ageing in 50% new oak for 24 months, yet this
is so very different in style; often broader, more muscular.
The Corino brothers are the rising stars of Piedmont. Their wines are beautiful examples of La Morra Barolos. Perfumed, subtle and elegant with the balancing acidity and fine tannin that make them so complete. Giuliano emphasises: “Barolo doesn’t have to just be about power.’’ A tasting of some beautifully refined and fresh 1991s, over a decade on, would seem to full justify this statement. As of the 2004 vintage the estate has been split in two, Giuliano will produce wines from Arborina, Giachini and will continue to make a Vecchie Vigne. Renato, who has set up his own estate, will produce Rocche, Arborina and some Vecchie Vigne. The Giovanni Corino wines continue to remain in a beautiful floral, red fruited, elegant style.

The resulting wine has both the power and the elegance. Nice freshness on the nose and palate. The tannins are firms but silky.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VINTAGE
Winter and Spring were dry. Since the beginning, climatic conditions predicted an early vintage. The water deficit worsened a little more up to July and the high temperatures in June made the vine suffered. The Merlot sagged after flowering because of these unusual dryness and heat.
2011 experienced unusual weather conditions that ultimately benefited many Cabernet Sauvignons. The grapes had a very good concentration of phenol compounds and very elegant tannins. The challenge of this vintage was a very strict sorting of the grapes. However, there is a lower yield (- 10%) due to the weather, and the berries were rather small with a thick skin.

The second wine of Gazin showed significantly better than the first in our tasting. A classic Pomerol, this is as compelling for its silken texture as it is for the pure, sunny fraise de bois flavor. The fruit and the formidable tannin merge seamlessly in a wine with high energy and a high yum factor. It's hard to keep your hands off the glass. Delicious as a young wine, this has the structure to sustain it for more than a decade.
About Winery: The Château Gazin vineyards cover 64.2 acres in a single lot, with 56.8 acres under vines, located on the renowned clay-gravel plateau of Pomerol. The estate can produce up to 100,000 bottles a year. A second AOC Pomerol wine "l’Hospitalet de Gazin", was created in 1986 in order to reserve the best of the harvest for Château Gazin.
The grapes are fermented in small cement vats. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels (50% new) according to the Bordeaux tradition: malolactic fermentation in casks, rackings to separate the fine wine from the lees, fining with egg whites and, if necessary, light filtration.

If Viña Ardanza seems to be going fast, the Gran Reserva 904 is even faster and we're now on the 2007 Gran Reserva 904. This wants to be the classic Gran Reserva--polished, silky and elegant, with aging potential. It is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo aged for four years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with eight manual rackings. I found that the freshness of the vintage and its relatively young age gave the wine a youngish character that I loved, combining developed notes of meat, spices, leather and balsam with almost cherry-like aromas. The palate feels balanced and elegant, with fine-grained and fully resolved tannins and great acidity. This vintage of 904 surprised me! 150,000 bottles produced.
La Rioja Alta is not resting on their laurels, as they are investing nine million Euros in improving their vineyards and winery, including an optical sorting table.

Voerzio's 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo is another terrific example of the year. Striking aromatics give the 2013 much of its lifted personality. Sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, mint, citrus and white pepper are all beautifully sculpted throughout. This is an especially delicate wine that impresses with its poise and freshness.

The 2009 Barolo Ginestra is a beautiful expression of Nebbiolo. This is a strong showing from the producer’s flagship vineyard. The aromatic tension and energy delivered reminds you that this is a young wine that needs more time to unwind and relax. But all the essentials are there: Licorice, tar, dried fruit, tobacco and a pretty addition of crushed spice or cardamom. The mouthfeel is finely chiseled and sharp with tight, young tannins at the back. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.

The selection process under proprietor Bruno Borie is so severe at Ducru Beaucaillou that readers should be giving serious attention to the second wine, Croix de Beaucaillou, which sports a dramatic black and gold label. The 2011 exhibits attractive black currant and black cherry fruit, medium body, silky tannins and a lush, round, up-front appeal. Enjoy it over the next decade.

This classic, powerful, firm Lynch Bages may be as concentrated (if not more so) than the 2005. The result is a full-bodied, fleshy Pauillac that will benefit from another 3-4 years of cellaring. It is capable of lasting 20-25 more years. Drink 2014-2039.

The 2006 Château Lynch Bages has another quite vivacious bouquet with lively black cherries, kirsch and wild mint aromas that do not hold back. I love the purity here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannin, well-judged acidity, a gentle grip in the mouth, and plenty of lightly spiced and surprisingly intense fruit on the bravura finish. The Cazes family oversaw a very sophisticated Lynch-Bages in this vintage that may well surpass many peoples' expectations.

Desmirail was classified a 3rd Grand Cru Classé as part of the 1855 classification. The wine is the result of a parcel of exceptional terroir within the Margaux appellation, which it represents perfectly with its delicate balance. Vinification is carried out using modern techniques and equipment, but with an overarching respect for tradition. This results in a wine that can be enjoyed in its youth, but which also has a tremendous capacity to improve with age. Strict grape selection and carefully adapted maturation methods are both key to making Château Desmirail into the Grand Vin it is.

Coffee, mild tobacco, cocoa, black fruits and subtle, refined oak on the nose. The palate shows light tannins marked by morello cherry. Enjoyable and seductive from now on.

The Reserve de la Comtesse 2010, a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, has a refined bouquet of dark cherries, plum and blackcurrant fruit that you might describe as "neat and tidy". The palate is medium-bodied with quite a plush, generous entry thanks to that ripe Merlot. It is a forward wine for a 2010, very approachable with a fresh finish. It should drink well over the next 10 years. Tasted November 2012.
