Playing true to type, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is another of the more open wines in this vintage. But that is only in relative terms. Layers of expressive red fruit, crushed flowers and spices flesh out in this radiant Barbaresco. In most vintages the Pora is one of the more accessible of the Riservas when young. The close proximity of the vineyard to the Tanaro River results in a warm microclimate that ripens the fruit earlier than elsewhere. In 2008, though, the Pora packs a serious punch. The coolness of the late harvest comes through in a finish laced with considerable tension and minerality. This is easily one of the very best Poras I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.

On the palate, this is a powerful, rich, creamy textured and very intense killer Riesling of great elegance. Provided with a very long and juicy finish, this is a silky textured and seamless wine that is rich and powerful but perfectly balanced. This dry-tasting "two-star" bottling is site-typically scented as well as lusciously loaded with lime and ripe cherry. A silken midpalate underlain by wet stone showcases its imposing fruit. The long finish harbors subtle apple seed piquancy and some elusively smoky and black-tea-like impingements for an impression slightly grainier as well as more mineral than the midpalate impression leads one to anticipate. At 12 percent alcohol, this is fuller than a Molitor white label Spätlese, yet still evinces a sense of lift. (David Schildknecht)

As Belgrave improves each year, it reveals a character that is close to the elegance and style of Saint-Julien, right next door. Chateau Belgrave is situated in Haut Medoc , just west of Beychevelle in St Julien . It is also next door to Chateau Lagrange , which is also in St. Julien. Just a few meters further and it could have been in St. Julien. This 2010, while dense, is balanced, and its rich blackberry flavor is already integrating into its firm tannins. This should age well for the medium term.

A gorgeously complex and lightly spiced nose serves up notes of violet, plum and plenty of pungent earth that is also reflected by the dense and serious medium-bodied flavors. There is excellent volume and concentration to the mid-palate that possesses impeccable phenolic ripeness, all wrapped in a seductive yet linear finish. This is very Gevrey in character with a brawny yet not overtly rustic mouth feel. Recommended.

Wine Advocate (Galloni): Proprietor Mauro Mascarello makes some of the most compelling, traditional wines in Piedmont. Mascarello’s signature Barolo, Monprivato, rarely shows well when young, yet it has a proven ability to transform magically in the bottle, something I have witnessed first-hand with more vintages than I can remember. 93 pts Wine Advocate: The 2005 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from their vineyards in the meander of the Ebro River, where they have some 100 hectares of vineyards. The wine fermented in the original oak vats that are now some 140 years of age. There is no temperature control and malolactic was also in the vat. The wine was transferred to oak barrels where it slowly matured in their deep, humid caves for no less than six years. After this, it was bottled unfiltered after being fined with egg whites. I think the quality gap between the Reserva and Gran Reserva has been getting smaller since the 2001 vintage and this 2005 is nothing short of exceptional. It's clean and complex, with more freshness. The wine is very spicy and with a palate that feels very balanced, livelier than in the past. It has a long finish where the flavors are clean. Easy to drink and very pleasurable. Some 250,000 bottles were produced in 2005.

The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc incorporates slightly less Grenache Blanc than normal and has more Bourboulenc and Picpoul in the blend. As always, it didn’t go through malolactic fermentation and was raised all in stainless steel. Hitting 13.6% natural alcohol, its medium-gold color is followed by lots of apple, lemon curd and citrus-like fruit characteristics that give way to more spice, toast and minerality with time in the glass. Vibrant, fresh and borderline racy, while not being lean, it’s an outstanding white that will benefit from a year in bottle and have a graceful evolution for another decade or more. As I commented in my recent retrospective article, Clos des Pape is one of the reference point estates for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape.

Starting out, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a brilliant, mostly tank-aged blend of 50% Grenache Blanc, 15% Clairette, 15% Bourboulenc and the balance Viognier and Roussanne (which were aged in barrel). Beautiful stuff, with rich white currants, citrus and tinges of minerality on the nose, it has fantastic freshness and focus on the palate, with clean, nicely defined aromas and flavor. Medium-bodied and perfectly balancing richness and freshness, it should be purchased by the case and consumed over the coming year or two. Drink now.

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is fabulous. In 2011, proprietor Paolo Bianchini bottled just one Brunello. That commitment to quality comes through loud and clear. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and licorice all flesh out in an effortless, incredibly inviting wine. The warmth of the vintage and the natural generosity of these vineyards in Castelnuovo is evident, yet the 2011 possesses remarkable balance to match all of that intensity. I don't expect the 2011 to make old bones, but is gorgeous today. Readers should expect a flamboyant, decadently full-throttle wine built on voluptuousness and generous, racy fruit. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a very beautiful wine that shows a fraction of good things to come. Very fruit-driven at the moment, it should flesh out further with time. Evident fruit underlines the warm growing conditions of this vintage. You get dark cherry, raspberry, dried strawberry and plum. The bouquet doesn't feel overripe per se, but you definitely get a taste of the warm growing season. Delve deeper, and this Brunello begins to reveal spice, herb, cola, tar and black licorice. These elements form the base of the wine's budding complexity. As nice as this wine is to drink now, I look forward to trying it five years from now. (ML) (3/2016)

The careful selection of the grapes and the work directives even for the purchased grapes has clearly paid off in the 2013 Alión, which has great freshness and perfume. It was cropped from a relatively normal growing season, but with a cold September with some rains that provoked a slight delay in the picking and especially the seed for a severe sorting of the grapes. It's considered a challenging vintage in general, and the bottles produced are slightly less than in the healthier 2012. It's always pure Tempranillo from over 30-year-old vines in different villages: Pesquera, Padilla, Moradillo... It fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts after a three-day cold soak, followed by malolactic and 12-14 months in new French barriques. It might be a lighter vintage for Alión, but one that has a subtler profile and harmony. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, with a thread of acidity going through its core and lifting it up. An elegant Alión. 260,000 bottles and some larger formats were filled in May 2015.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Chateau Camensac 2010 has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and cigar box scents that demand coaxing. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, chalky tannins. There are plenty of potent tobacco notes here with a touch of spice on the finish. It is a little introverted at the moment, this should develop nicely with several years in the cellar. Tasted January 2014.

Proprietor Alexandre Bonnie has produced brilliant white and red wines at this estate's NASA space age-looking winemaking facility. I remember these wines from the early days of The Wine Advocate, and they were undrinkable swill. That is certainly not the case today. This is classic Pessac-Leognan with leafy tobacco, smoky red and black currant, forest floor, cedar, and graphite notes. It is a medium-bodied wine of impeccable purity, texture, and balance.

The 2007 Montevetrano is the product of an unusual vintage characterized by hot temperatures that were virtually uninterrupted throughout the year. The combination of explosive ripe fruit, richness and finesse is utterly breathtaking. The warmth of the vintage comes through in the wine's generosity, yet there are no suggestions whatsoever of over- ripeness. This is a magnificent Montevetrano. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.

The 2007 Montevetrano suggests a more prominent presence of Cabernet Sauvignon, aromatically speaking, compared to the other wines in this mini retrospective. The percentage of grapes used is the same but this impression is reinforced by the warmth of the summer growing season and the exuberance of the fruit. Blackberry aromas are followed by spice, leather and tar. There are subtle notes of balsam herb and green peppercorn as well. The wine is structured and firm but not astringent. The tannins are softly integrated and fine in texture.

The 2014 d'Armailhac is bright, precise and finely sculpted. Expressive red stone fruit, flowers, mint, chalk and citrus abound in this vibrant, beautifully delineated Pauillac. Open-knit and expressive, with good depth and silky tannins, the wine exudes class. The fresh, invigorating style is classic 2014. This is a lovely showing. Tasted two times.

From a mixture of sand, gravel, and clay soils, this unheralded terroir produces wines well-above its pedigree thanks to the extraordinary efforts of proprietors Chantal and Gerard Perse. The wines are given a 4- to 5-week maceration in both stainless steel and oak, and are aged sur-lie in new oak. The dark ruby/purple-colored 2003 offers up notes of smoky meats, melted licorice, jammy black cherries, spice box, earth, and cedar. This plump, fleshy, sexy, unfined, unfiltered wine represents a classic blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2008 fills out nicely over time with attractive black fruit, smoke, tar, game and savory herb notes. Although quite virile and imposing today, the 2008 also shows striking inner perfume and a level of sweetness that is likely to require some time to emerge, suggesting the wine has plenty of potential for improvement ahead. The 2008 spent 42 months in French oak, exceedingly long by today’s standards. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. (AG)
