This is also quite aromatically expressive with its earthy array of various red berries, floral and lightly sauvage scents. This is also really quite pretty and more refined than usual thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins.

The 2013 La Grola represents a blend of 90% Corvina Veronese and 10% Oseleta. Past editions saw a small part Syrah but this is no longer the case. The wine's appearance is rich and deeply saturated with an inky black color. The bouquet revs up slowly with black prune and plum followed by spice, tar, road paving and cured meat. The effect is extra thick and dense. In the mouth, La Grola displays syrupy richness with both savory and slightly sweet mahogany spice. The wine rests in once-used barrique for 16 months.

Well-spiced and herbaceous, this well-meshed red frames flavors of ripe currant, espresso, dried fig and smoke with fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Harmonious. Drink now through 2021.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino bursts from the glass with freshly cut flowers, violets, leather, licorice and black cherries. Firm underlying tannins lend vibrancy to the voluptuous fruit. The Casanova di Neri straight bottling – sometimes referred to as the “white label” – is made from some of the estate’s cooler sites. In 2007 the wine has more depth, fruit and overall harmony than is typically the case. Bright acidity frames the long, polished finish. In short, this is a fabulous wine from Giacomo Neri. Along with the 2006, the 2007 is one the best and most complete vintages I can remember tasting in some time. Most importantly of all, though, it is flat-out delicious. 90 points The Wine Advocate: The 2013 Cotes du Rhone Les Deux Albions is 50-60% Syrah and the rest Grenache and other permitted varieties. It exhibits classic Syrah character with its sweet dark fruits, pepper, wood smoke and crushed rock-like minerality. Medium to full-bodied, it bucks the vintage stereotype and has a rounded, supple texture, good concentration and plenty of length. Possibly outstanding, it should have a decade of longevity. 

Winemaker Notes: Co-fermented in concrete vats as usual, it develops a good density, good color and a length that is usual of a great vintage. 80% of the cuvée was aged in concrete vats, which help to create the best expression. Its fruit full of terroir develops and shows characteristics of gingerbread, strawberries and violets.

Tasted at BBR’s 2005/2009 tasting in London. The Haut Bages Liberal has a refined bouquet, timid at first but growing in confidence with dark berries, wild hedgerow, truffle and scorched earth. The palate is medium-bodied with a racy entry, crisp blackberry, graphite and bell pepper with a masculine, tannic, chalky-textured finish. It is a little rustic at the moment, but full of character. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh on the entry, slightly savoury, with hints of Italian cured meats towards the spicy finish. This is a very fine Lynch Moussas. Tasted November 2012.

drinking. More transparent than most. Dry finish.
Tasted 17 Feb: 1.5km from sister property Ch Batailley. Not finished when I tasted it so I have given precedence to my impressions when I tasted it blind in early April . Very dark purple. Light green-peppery note. Sweet start and lacks the sheer concentration of some 2010s but pretty snazzy. Very sweet and flattering. (Score: 16 18-30)

Do not ignore this wonderful Cotes de Castillon! It has a beautiful, vibrant bouquet with very expressive Cabernet Franc. Wonderful delineation here with hints of crushed rose petals and vivacious red fruits. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. There is a real fleshiness here from the Merlot, but the Cabernet Franc completes the picture with the hints of tobacco on the finish. Superb.

From the famed proprietor Denis Durantou, who is better known for his famous Pomerol, L-Eglise Clinet, this wine is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Dense purple in color, with a boatload of tannin but also impressive levels of extract and richness, for a 2009 this wine needs some patience from its purchaser. It was more hedonistic from barrel, but it actually seems even more seriously endowed from bottle, and I would hold off drinking it for a year or so, as it should keep for at least a decade or more.

Château Montlandrie is situated in Cotes de Castillon and is owned the brilliant Denis Durantou, owner of Châteu L’Eglise Clinet in Pomerol as well as vines with Château Saintayme, Château Cruzelles and Château Chenade - who purchased the property in 2009. The terroir is similar to some of the best sites in St Emilion with a typical blend, 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannins. The acidity is just about perfect and there is great poise on the grippy, saline finish. Stunning purity and balance – every element is carefully polished to perfection. 2012 is drinking beautifully now, but will continue to evolve. Excellent buy considering the vintage and the pedigree name attached to this wine.

Not quite as fat as the '95, but very concentrated and persistent. Showing more grip and style than the '94 Margaux.

A dark, imposing wine, the 2012 Roc des Cambes is distinctly dark and brooding. Black cherries, smoke, licorice, tar and dark spices fleshed [?]. Vertical in style and quite structured, the 2012 could use another few years in bottle to fully come together, which will also help the chewy tannins to integrate a bit more fully. Roc des Cambes is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec that spend 18 months in 100% new French oak.

One of the superstar châteaux of the Bordeaux Côtes, François Mitjavile's red is always a wine with plenty of texture and concentration, not to mention alcohol in 2012. Interesting comparing the Roc des Cambes with the Tertre-Roteboeuf, for here there is a little more drive and intensity on the nose, more volume emanating from the glass with pomegranate and cranberry scents intermingling with fresh gravel notes. The palate is soft and sensual on the entry with layers of fleshy red berry fruit. The tannins have a Burgundy-like finesse and there is a lovely touch of Schezhuan pepper numbing the tip of the tongue on the finish. This will be a fascinating Roc des Cambes.

As I have consistently written in the past, this limited production cuvee, from a 12-acre site that contains a parcel of extremely old vines, 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, is meant to last three decades or more. Tasting like a liqueur of rocks interwoven with creme de cassis, espresso roast, toasty oak, and enormous levels of tannin, it is neither out of balance nor astringent. It is a concentrated, backward, impeccably balanced St.-Emilion made with an uncompromising view of the craft of winemaking. It displays superb intensity, a fabulous texture, a foreboding, tannic overlay, incredibly ripe, pure fruit, and perfectly aligned acidity and tannin. Forget if for a decade, and consume it between 2020-2040.

Bright ruby-red. Superripe aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and crushed rock; like a liqueur of botanical herbs. Then dense, sappy and superconcentrated, with a powerful minerality, solid acidity and a note of black pepper perking up the wine's rather clenched core of fruit. Finishes with a boatload of tannins. This almost painfully intense wine, a great success for this chateau, needs up to a decade of cellaring.

(as the Produttori has declassified its crus in 2010, there will be 28,000 cases of this blend): Tangy cherry and raspberry aromas are lifted by flowers and mint on the cool, inviting nose. Silky-sweet and floral, with lovely inner-mouth juiciness to its red berry flavors. Owing to the wine's moderate body and flesh, the tannins show a slightly dryness but the long, juicy finish offers enticing floral perfume. A lovely, sharply delineated Barbaresco at a very reasonable price.

The deep ruby colour promises a classic wine of superb quality. The nose backs up that promise with intense aromas of cherry, ripe black fruits, herbs and a slight earthiness. The palate provides intense flavours of black and red fruits, spices, herbs and wildflowers. The wine is well structured, has great acidity which marries perfectly with the ripe tannins. The lingering finish provides a closing offer of rich chocolate at the end. 

Match this with rich beef dishes, venison, game, roasted meats and strong cheese. 

The winery’s attention to detail when making its wines are what makes this wine so good. The hand harvested grapes are fermented in stainless steel vats for four weeks. It is then aged in new and old oak barriques for 12 months followed by a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. 

The Gaja family acquired the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in 1994. It is situated in the south west of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, and comprises of 40 acres of vineyards. The name comes from the church of Santa Restituta which is located on the estate. It has been beautifully restored by the family and it now forms the subject of the wine labels. 

The family has now also obtained a further 25 acres in the north east of the appellation and has developed a state of the art winemaking facility and below ground cellar which reduces the impact on the environment – a subject very close to the family’s heart.

94 points Vinous : Opaque ruby. Powerful aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, smoky minerals, lavender and Indian spices. Deeply concentrated, palate-staining dark berry and bitter cherry flavors are framed by chewy tannins and pick up strong spice and floral notes with air. Still quite young but already expressive, finishing with lingering notes of sweet dark berries and candied flowers.

One of the bigger, more tannic and powerful wines of the vintage, although it is only 14.4% alcohol, which puts it well below some of the blockbusters in the Cotes de Castillon, this wine exhibits wonderfully pure black raspberry, black cherry and graphite notes intermixed with hints of cedar and licorice, in a medium to full-bodied, slightly softer and less extracted style than usual. This is another sleeper of the vintage that should drink nicely for up to a decade.
