blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a surprisingly opulent, flamboyant, fleshy, soft crowd-pleaser displaying abundant amounts of smoked herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, espresso roast, chocolate, and toast. Full-bodied with superb concentration as well as a beautifully textured mouthfeel, this 2006 should drink well for 10-15+ years. Like all of the Neipperg estates, this wine's capsule has a clever anti-fraud device, which I think will be increasingly employed by many French estates.This nearly 30-acre estate, which was purchased several years ago by Stephan von Neipperg (owner of Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte), performed exceptionally well in 2006.

Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting the château, the 2010 Batailley may well have been the best wine in a tasting that encompassed three centuries of winemaking at the estate. The nose offers outstanding delineation and mineralité. It positively fizzes in the glass with all that coiled-up energy, ladling out vivid blackberry and cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, but it is the detail and precision that achieves a level that makes the 2010 a benchmark for the Pauillac estate. It sashays towards a tensile, tar and graphite-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. This is destined for long-term aging insofar that its quality will not be widely appreciated for many years. Tasted April 2016.

Made in a more charming style than the normally backward, rather formidably tannic wines of Batailley, this 2010 is an endearing, elegant wine, but it has no shortage of power, richness and intensity. It displays loads of beautiful cassis, cedar and Christmas fruitcake notes along with impressive purity, texture and a full-bodied mouthfeel. Usually much more austere, this vintage seems to have produced a richer, more layered and opulent style of Batailley that can be approached in 3-5 years and consumed over the following 25 years.

This has an intriguing bouquet (even more so, once I discovered its identity.) The nose is more Rhône-like than Bordeaux, with notes of Provencal herbs, fennel and thyme. The palate is full-bodied, a little sullen on the entry with a stout, much more Bordeaux-like personality than the nose (which may be a one-off.) Tobacco-laced blackberry and cedar-wood, finely balanced towards the finish. Moderate length. Fine. Tasted October 2009.

The best classic style of Grenache and Tempranillo pulling together joyful fruit expression and serious depth. In the mouth it is amazingly complex and so unique. A benchmark Rioja blend. A rich, sweet and savoury Reserva style with all the red cherries and a strong Grenache influence. It is somewhat old-fashioned, in a good way, with plentiful integrated oak and a fine rasp of tannin. This has a wonderful oxidative style, giving it a superb savoury nose of leather. It is a perfect combination of mellowness versus vigour, and at the same time exudes great finesse.

Vintages for Viña Ardanza seem to be going fast. It seems like yesterday that the 2001 was released and now the 2008 Viña Ardanza is already here. This is the first vintage when they have been able to use the fruit from their new Garnacha vineyards in the village of Tudelilla (Rioja Baja), La Pedriza, which represents 20% of the blend complementing the majority of Tempranillo. The wine was put in barrel in March 2009, separately; the Tempranillo was in four-year-old barrels for 36 months with six rackings, and the Garnacha in second and third use barrels for 30 months with five rackings. Vintages might go fast, but the wine does not feel too young, which was my fear. There are notes of stewed meat, cured leather, cloves, other spices and an overall balsamic character. The palate feels solid, consistent, nicely built, with abundant tannins and good balancing acidity. This should stand up to food and be able to develop in bottle.

Cedar, tea and tobacco notes frame the dried cherry, vanilla and orange peel flavors in this traditional red. Offers good depth and lively acidity, with an alluring, spicy finish. An old-school style, compact and balanced. Drink now through 2023.

The 2011 Lytton Springs has a wonderful burst immediacy to it, backed up by the structure of the year. This isn't the most nuanced Lytton Springs in recent memory. Despite its considerable appeal today, my sense is the 2011 needs a few more years in bottle for all of the elements to fully come together. The blend is 82% Zinfandel, 16% Petite Sirah and 2% Carignane.

(includes 16% petite sirah and 2% carignane): Opaque ruby. Dark berry and vanilla scents are lifted by smoky spice and mineral qualities and a touch of white pepper. Sappy and appealingly sweet, offering energetic boysenberry and blueberry flavors that become more tangy with air. Silky and assertively spicy on a penetrating finish that leaves subtle floral and mocha notes on the palate.

The Block 6 vineyard dates back to 1892. Over 110 years later four acres still remain, cropping at extremely low levels, the fruit is of extreme quality. The wine is an excellent example of a big, rich & brooding McLaren Shiraz. After basket pressing & fermentation in open top fermenters built in 1896, the wine is matured for over 2 years in new American & Baltic oak producing intense flavour & great longevity. A wine which will reward patience well.

The Block 6 Shiraz comes from centurion vines plated in 1896. The 2006 Block 6 Shiraz has a very deep garnet color going a little brick in the rim and an evolved, earthy / gamey nose with notes of mulberries, dried plums, kirsch and tobacco plus menthol, cinnamon stick, licorice and espresso. Rich and full yet elegantly constructed, it presents a medium level of very fine tannins, crisp acid and a long layered finish. A very fine glass now, it should continue to cellar to 2019+.

A dark, brooding wine of rather large proportions, but put together with aplomb; at the core there is an abundance of sweet fruit, and the structure is dense, tannic and chewy and requires a little time to soften; should reward patience well.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Chateau Camensac 2010 has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and cigar box scents that demand coaxing. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, chalky tannins. There are plenty of potent tobacco notes here with a touch of spice on the finish. It is a little introverted at the moment, this should develop nicely with several years in the cellar. Tasted January 2014.

This Lytton Springs Ridge has Black cherry, vanilla, toasty oak and mint aromas. Complex of raspberry, black olive, licorice with chalky tannins. Long finish with intriguing notes of pepper and spice.

The 2014 Lytton Springs is another absolutely gorgeous wine. Perhaps because of its relatively recent bottling, the 2004 feels a bit compressed, but there appears to be plenty of complexity and depth hiding behind the acidity and tannin. Far from an easygoing Zinfandel, the 2014 Lytton is a wine to buy and cellar for at least a handful of years. The wine's richness, persistence and vertical intensity all lead me to believe it will be special in time. Black cherry, pomegranate, mint and sweet spices meld into the resonant finish. A kick of tannin from the Petite adds personality, something the 2014 has in spades.

More fresh and elegant than the Geyserville, with a touch more focus, the 2014 Lytton Springs is another beautiful wine from this estate. Made from 69% Zinfandel, 18% Petite Sirah and the rest Carignan and Mourvèdre, aged in 20% new American oak, it boasts fabulous notes of plums, blackberry jam, toasted spice and licorice as well as medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful mid-palate depth and notable tannin. The Geyserville is a touch sexier, but this will be longer lived. Give bottles 2-3 years of cellaring and enjoy over the following decade or more.

The 2004 Chateau Musar is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. This is a rather civilized, laid back Musar... Its balance, combining the nice fruit, elegant mid-palate, persistent finish and backbone, gives it a tightly wound, precise and focused demeanor. The tannins are not completely integrated, but not overly hard. They provided some welcome grip and vibrancy and never overwhelmed the wine. In the long run, they should serve this wine in good stead. Overall, it is an exceptionally graceful, somewhat modern and restrained Musar, bright, with that silky texture I saw in the Hochar reviewed this issue, while adding those layers of concentration. The cherry on top is the intensity of fruit flavor – bursts of delicious and juicy fruit on the finish, admittedly nuanced by some of the gamey notes I see here so often. Call it raspberry flavored, though, because the fruit is delicious. The gamey notes were in fact moderate and, at least for my taste, not an issue. As this rather subtle Musar aired out, I liked it more and more. I’ve had Musars that were bigger, burlier, more rustic and more astringent. Here, the subtle start was unremarkable, but it gathered steam, showed remarkable finesse and then won me over. This will certainly do better with food. Drink now-2021.

"It has a light but well defined bouquet with notes of redcurrant, boysenberry, mint leaf and cedar with good intensity and vigour. It reminds more of Las-Cases ’81 in some ways. The palate is medium-bodied with a dry, quite savoury entry, powdery and slightly edgy tannins. The fruit appears to be fading although the secondary flavours and compensating with touches of Chinese 5-spice, orange zest, dried blood and sandalwood. Classic old skool St-Julien towards the finish that has moderate length." 

91 points Wine Spectator (Oct 1994) : Polished, big, dark-colored, with rich and opulent aromas and flavors and loads of tobacco, cedary and berry character. 

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Oct 1989): A top success for the vintage, the 1981 Gruaud-Larose is dark ruby, with a full-intensity bouquet of ripe black currants, spicy oak, plums, leather, smoked meat, and violets. This wine is concentrated on the palate, with rich, tannic, lingering flavors.

The top cuvee from one of the benchmark estates in the Ventoux, the 2010 Cotes du Ventoux Artemia is a blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah, with the Grenache coming from 80+-year-old vines and the Syrah from 50+-year-old vines. Aged 18 months in barrel, it offers a deep, rich and layered profile of blackberry, licorice, underbrush and ground herbs. Showing more chocolaty nuances with air, it's a serious, medium to full-bodied wine that has beautiful balance, a great mid-palate and fantastic length. Give it another year or two, and enjoy it over the following decade.

Azelia's 2012 Barolo is fresh, floral and nicely lifted in the glass. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherries, spices, mint and rose petal lift from the glass in the 2012 Barolo. An excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years, Azelia's straight Barolo is all about balance and understated harmony. The style is gracious, perfumed and weightless, with pretty saline notes that give the wine its sense of proportion. This is one of the best straight 2012 Barolos I tasted. Fruit sources are 70% Serralunga and 30% Castiglione Falletto. The 2012 spent two and a half years in cask. Hail was an issue in Bricco Voghera, so Azelia did not produce a Riserva. All the best fruit went into the straight Barolo.

If Viña Ardanza seems to be going fast, the Gran Reserva 904 is even faster and we're now on the 2007 Gran Reserva 904. This wants to be the classic Gran Reserva--polished, silky and elegant, with aging potential. It is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo aged for four years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with eight manual rackings. I found that the freshness of the vintage and its relatively young age gave the wine a youngish character that I loved, combining developed notes of meat, spices, leather and balsam with almost cherry-like aromas. The palate feels balanced and elegant, with fine-grained and fully resolved tannins and great acidity. This vintage of 904 surprised me! 150,000 bottles produced.
La Rioja Alta is not resting on their laurels, as they are investing nine million Euros in improving their vineyards and winery, including an optical sorting table.

Located in the southern part of Burgundy’s Cote de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet has a varied terroir consisting of pebbly limestone, marl, and sandy soil. The bouquet shows floral tones, accented b herbal and mineral undertones and a subtly nutty quality. Honey and pear aromas appear over time. Fermented on the lees and aged in French oak barrels for more than a year, Roux Chassagne-Montrachet is smooth and rich in texture.
