93 points Wine Spectator  (7/2009) : Ripe and peppery, with a spicy note weaving over the black cherry, dried tomato, licorice and mint flavors that keep pulsing through the long, expressive finish. Best from 2010 through 2017.

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ​(7/2009) : Saturated ruby. Intensely floral, high-pitched aromas of black raspberry, mulberry, violet and rose, lifted by a pungent peppery quality. Spicy dark berry flavors gain flesh and sweetness with air, picking up a smoky mineral quality and a note of candied violet. Finishes juicy and very long, with berry skin and floral notes. 

92 points Wine Enthusiast ​(2/2010) : Somewhat precariously balanced at 15.7% alcohol, this may not turn out to be the most long-lived Shiraz, but it is delicious for current consumption. The tannins are soft and creamy in texture, while the blueberry and black berry fruit is intensely concentrated, tinged with nuances of vanilla, menthol and chocolate. 

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ​ ((JM) 12/2009):  My favorite of the Garden Series is the 2007 Shiraz Lily’s Garden from McLaren Vale. Purple-colored, it has an enticing perfume of balsam wood, lavender, incense, pepper, bacon, and blueberry. With excellent grip and balance, this smooth-textured, savory Shiraz will improve over the next 2-3 years and drink well through 2020.

The 2003 Chateau Musar seems very different than years such as 1981, but maybe that’s just because it is so young, or possibly because of the vintage or an increasing nod to modernity. Either way, this is a ripe, sexy Musar. It retains its elegant mid-palate as well as lovely fruit and fine balance. There is a slightly sweet tinge to the finish, perhaps a touch of a high-toned demeanor. The lush texture and surprising richness make this a rather luscious wine by Musar standards. It is showing little but baby fat right now. Fresh and youthful, it is just a friendly puppy today. I’m not so sure it is in the winery’s preferred style, but it should be a very enjoyable vintage for consumers. Showing not a trace of age, it has a lot of potential and a long life ahead. It may yet be entitled to further upticks in score, but let’s be a bit conservative at the moment. Drink now-2035.

Pale brick. Very sweet and warm and bricks and hugely satisfying. Bring on the pistachios! Lovely bottle. So satisfying. No rough edges at all and not a silly price for a wine of this age. Dust but lots of fruit too, as well as lots of tannin. Long.

The 2004 Chateau Musar is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. This is a rather civilized, laid back Musar... Its balance, combining the nice fruit, elegant mid-palate, persistent finish and backbone, gives it a tightly wound, precise and focused demeanor. The tannins are not completely integrated, but not overly hard. They provided some welcome grip and vibrancy and never overwhelmed the wine. In the long run, they should serve this wine in good stead. Overall, it is an exceptionally graceful, somewhat modern and restrained Musar, bright, with that silky texture I saw in the Hochar reviewed this issue, while adding those layers of concentration. The cherry on top is the intensity of fruit flavor – bursts of delicious and juicy fruit on the finish, admittedly nuanced by some of the gamey notes I see here so often. Call it raspberry flavored, though, because the fruit is delicious. The gamey notes were in fact moderate and, at least for my taste, not an issue. As this rather subtle Musar aired out, I liked it more and more. I’ve had Musars that were bigger, burlier, more rustic and more astringent. Here, the subtle start was unremarkable, but it gathered steam, showed remarkable finesse and then won me over. This will certainly do better with food. Drink now-2021.

As elegant as Serge Hochar himself, the man behind Château Musar, this blend of cabernet sauvignon, carignan and cinsault is lithe yet firm. The fruit feels autumnal, in shades of rust red and ocher spice, and is saturated with a spicy, foresty fragrance. It's delicious now, ready for game birds scented with juniper berries, and should live on for another decade.

Nuanced by cherries and spice, it is quite delicious...The ’00 is the powerhouse bruiser, the most rustic, while the Hochar is the approachable, easier wine. This is the one in the middle, arguably the best balance of fruit and power. On the downside, this is as gamey and funky as the 2000, but the balance is different, the wine seeming fruitier and fleshier, not quite as austere. Depending on your taste, you may find that a good thing, or prefer the more powerful and intellectual 2000. This is still powerful, I hasten to add, with drying notes on the finish, but the fruitiness melds beautifully with the barnyard notes, and it is nicely supported by the tannin rather than overwhelmed. As with the 2000, this should age well, although the 2000 should age longer, and this will be a wine some will love, and some will find has too much barnyard. Personally, I enjoyed it a lot, and was just imagining how it would work with venison. Drink now-2020.

91 Points International Wine Cellar - "Inky ruby. Laid-back aromas of dark berries, black cherry and herbs, with a subtle note of violet. Clean and bright in the mouth, with taut blackcurrant and dark cherry flavors picking up sweetness with air. The flinty black cherry note repeats on the finish, which features a subtle floral pastille quality and very good persistence. I like this wine's understated character, but I wish it had a little more flesh and sweetness for an even higher score."

The selection process under proprietor Bruno Borie is so severe at Ducru Beaucaillou that readers should be giving serious attention to the second wine, Croix de Beaucaillou, which sports a dramatic black and gold label. The 2011 exhibits attractive black currant and black cherry fruit, medium body, silky tannins and a lush, round, up-front appeal. Enjoy it over the next decade.

Deep ruby red in color with garnet highlights, with charming fragrances of wild cherry, black cherry, chocolate and spicy toasting. A full-bodied wine, round and warm, with soft velvety tannins and a long finish on the palate. 

酒莊:Cecilia Beretta is the jewel of Pasqua Family and the prime objective of the Cecilia Beretta estate is to recapture the force and personality of the traditional of the Valpolicella area. The activity is geared towards making a smallish range of very fine wines. Amarone, the most prestigious wine of the Valpolicella area, is made from grapes that undergoes, after harvest, a process known as “appassimento”, or semi-drying. This Amarone is obtained only from vineyards of Terre di Cariano at the heart of Valpolicella Classica.

釀造:This Amarone is obtained only from the best bunches of the Valpolicella grapes, carefully harvested by hand at the end of September and placed in the fruttaio, where they are left to raisin in wooden crates per 3 months. After raisining, the grapes increases in sugar extracts by 25-30%. The dried grapes are pressed and left to ferment for 25-30 days. Afterwards 70% of the wine is placed in oak and cherry barriques and the remaining is placed in larger tonneaux where malolactic fermentation takes place. After 14-16 months, the wine is bottled where ages for at least 6 months. 

食物配搭: An elegant, noble wine, to be enjoyed alone or as an accompaniment to an important meal with grilled red meat, venison, game and mature cheeses. Try it also with dark chocolate.

The fifth vineyard is made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 1981. Triga’s vineyards stand on fossilized chalk with a stone topsoil at an altitude of 700-750 meters above sea level. Showing more and more spice with air, it's an impressive 2004 that will continue to shine for another 4-5 years, possibly longer.

Guy Charlemagne Blanc de Blancs Reserve Brut NV

The Reserve Brut cuvée is from the Le Mesnil sur Oger and Oger, Côte des Blancs terroir, both with their limestone soils. This brut champagne is made solely with Chardonnay from our 100% Grand Crus. A champagne where lightness and finesse play the lead role, made from a reserve wine blend and light dosage at around 8 grams per litre. This gives it longevity and subtle aromas. Vinified in thermo regulated stainless steel and matured between two and three years in our underground cellars, the Cuvée Reserve Brut is a harmonious wine, wholesome, full-bodied with very mineral aromas. It possesses an elegance and vivacity which will allow for the best pairings but it will be particularly appreciated as an aperitif.

Pale yellow color, steady stream of fine bubbles, bright. Very citrusy nose, where acacia and rose water balance each other out. Creamy mouth with an exceptional length, the citrus notes (lime and pink grapefruit) give it freshness before melting into notes of fresh hazelnuts and yeasty brioche. This wine will be appreciated both during aperitif or with an appetizer of warm oysters.

Medium-deep garnet colour. The nose here is wild and complex, with black and red cherries, tobacco, dried violets and truffle. The palate finds a wonderful balance between youthful cherries and mature cigar box notes. There are layers of juicy plums and undertones of flowers and smoke. The tannins give the wine structure, but at 15 years of age have softened into the wine, making this ready to drink. This is a delicious wine, which exhibits both regional typicity from Sangiovese and superb fleshiness from the Merlot. Tasted at June 2015.

Solid and powerful CC, offering loads of black fruit, gamy and vanilla character. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, balanced, dark chocolate-tinged finish. Lots of toasted oak and ripe fruit. Still needs to come together, yet such potential. Best after 2003. 4,900 cases made.

Proprietor Jean-Philippe Janoueix has fashioned a full-bodied, deep, concentrated wine revealing sweet notes of licorice, chocolate, espresso, cassis, and cherry. Long, dense, full-bodied, rich, and pure with enough oak and acidity to add complexity and focus, it should drink well for 12-15 years. Interestingly, this cuvee received a Burgundian-like treatment of malolactic in barrel after frequent pigeages in small oak fermentation tanks, an unusual upbringing in Bordeaux. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered."

TASTING SCORES

The resulting wine has both the power and the     elegance.  Nice freshness on the nose and palate. The tannins are firms but silky.

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VINTAGE

Winter and Spring were dry. Since the beginning, climatic conditions predicted an early vintage. The water deficit worsened a little more up to July and the high temperatures in June made the vine suffered.  The Merlot sagged after flowering because of these unusual dryness and heat.

2011 experienced unusual weather conditions that ultimately benefited many Cabernet Sauvignons. The grapes had a very good concentration of phenol compounds and very elegant tannins. The challenge of this vintage was a very strict sorting of the grapes. However, there is a lower yield (- 10%)  due to the weather, and the berries were rather small with a thick skin.

95 Points James Suckling: So much violet, licorice and berry character to this. Wonderful depth. Full body, dusty and chewy tannins and a persistent and intense finish. Layered mouthfeel. Drink in 2020.

92 Points Antonio Galloni: Deep red with ruby tinges. Delicately flinty and herbal notes complicate sour red cherry, redcurrant and underbrush aromas. Fresh and juicy but with an almost austere quality to the crisp red berry and minty plum flavors. Finishes long and clean with a mineral nuance. The herbal note disapperars with aeration, so it’s of paramount importance to give this wine plenty of air. Pacenti makes 20,000 bottles a year of this Brunello from 25 to 35 year old vines with roughly 75-80% of the grapes grown in the northern Pellagrilli estate vineyards and the rest from the Piancornello vineyards in the southern reaches Montalcino.

92 Points The Wine Advocate : Boasting contemporary lines and a generously extracted style, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli delivers an approach that will appeal to a wider circle of consumers, far outside hardcore Brunello enthusiasts. The bouquet peels off slowly with rich intensity and dark fruit notes of black cherry, plum, soft spice, tobacco and licorice. You don't get any of the bitter or thorny acidity that can sometimes make Brunello difficult to love, especially in its youth. This wine is appropriate for near or medium-term drinking.

91 Points Wine Enthusiast: This opens with dry underbrush, sun-baked soil and French oak aromas. The palate is equally brooding, its dried black cherry and blackberry fruit brushed with licorice and espresso flavors. Assertive, close-grained tannins leave a firm finish. Drink 2020–2027.

This is followed by a focused, elegant Shiraz with a plush texture, outstanding depth and grip, and 5-7 years of aging potential. It should drink well through 2026. After several listless performances from this superb terroir near Cheval Blanc and the Pomerol border, La Dominique's 2006 exhibits a dense purple color and a sweet nose of licorice, nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), raspberry, and kirsch. Full, with a certain flamboyance, ripe tannins, and a layered, long finish, this is a terrific La Dominique to drink over the next 12-14 years.

Full ruby-red. Aromas of black plum, molten chocolate, mocha and licorice show a slightly liqueur-like aspect. Creamy-sweet and lush, with a generous texture to the black cherry, violet and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes sweet and smoothly tannic but with good backbone. This is the first vintage to be vinified by Jean-Luc Thunevin.

92 Points Wine Enthusiast: Truffle, leather, Mediterranean brush, chopped herb and black-skinned fruit aromas meld together with a balsamic note. The juicy, concentrated palate shows dried cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and licorice while fine-grained tannins lend support. Give it time for the tannins to fully integrate. Drink 2020–2030.

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Feb 2015):  Altesino's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino stands proud among its peers. No other wine I tasted among the new releases in Montalcino achieves this unique level of aromatic finesse and distinction. The bouquet is almost purely floral in character with a strong emphasis on pressed rose petal, dried violets and potpourri. The fruit tones are less emphatic and include bright cherry and red currant. In the mouth, the wine's compressed texture is accented by fennel seed and licorice. the 2009 vintage had more power and heat, but this version shows elegant restraint. 93+ (ML) 

93 points Wine Spectator (Jun 2015): Expressive aromas of eucalyptus, juniper and wild rosemary give way to sweet berry flavors, though the juniper, rosemary and emerging mint accents linger. This is like a walk in the woods, with a fresh, elegant frame. Best from 2017 through 2030.

Tasting Note: “Kirsch, black cherry, dark chocolate and cassis all abouund on the nose and palate. This is enticing and very plush with a good cherry and damson fruit core. Granular with ripe tannins and although there is clearly high levels of glycerol and sweetness of fruit it is all managed and held in check. The dollop Malbec gives a black pepper and spicey edge to the wine, the Merolt giving weight and roundness and the Cabernet Sauvignon keeping the structure”.

Series M takes its name from the Malbec and Merlot which predominantly define the style of this wine. Series M is sensuous wine with a firm core structure for aging. Malbec provides its black fruit aromas and fleshy texture, Merlot adds softness and red fruit aromas, and Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure.

About Vilafonte:
Vilafonté is the first American and South African joint wine-making venture within the global wine community. This ground-breaking red wine project is a partnership between a well respected group of 'quality driven' wine specialists from South Africa and the United States. The name, Vilafonté, derives from the primary soil type of the 100 acre estate, whose character forms the foundation of the wines.

Zelma Long is Head Winemaker for the Vilafonté project. Zelma is one of America's best known winemakers. One of the first women to study enology and viticulture at U.C. Davis, she began her winemaking career at Robert Mondavi Winery, rapidly working into the Chief Winemaker position.

Vilafonté's General Manager is Michael Ratcliffe. Mike qualified as a business major before attending the University of Adelaide. Mike is Managing Director of his family estate, Warwick which is recognized as one of South Africa's foremost wine estates.

Phil Freese is head 'wine-grower' and creator of the Vilafonté vineyard which he calls "Different by Design". Phil spent 13 years as Robert Mondavi’s Vice-President of Wine Growing. Phil designed the first Opus One vineyards, and initiated the remote sensing project with NASA that has spawned a new wave of tools for viticulture analysis and quality enhancement.
