In youth: yellow-gold, subtly oaky, and creamy-textured, rich yet dry and intensely citrusy, with honeyed nuances. Wholly unique, the style has been described as resembling ‘dry Sauternes’ or mature white Graves. Chateau Musar Whites develop tawny hues and mellow spicy characters as they age. The cellars at Ghazir holds bottles of this wine dating as far back as 1954. 

Grapes and vines
Seven years in the making, Chateau Musar White is a blend of ancient grape varieties Obaideh and Merwah, indigenous to the mountains of Lebanon and said to be related to Chasselas Chardonnay and Semillon. The Obaideh vineyards are in the foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountains on stony, chalky soils, while the Merwah vines are on the seaward side of Mount Lebanon, on calcareous gravels. Yields are very low for these untrained bushvines: 10 - 20 hl per hectare. At high altitude (around 1400m) they are still on their own roots, among very few vineyards in the world of this calibre.

Winemaking
Chateau Musar White is fermented in French oak barriques (from the forest of Nevers) for 9 months, bottled and blended at the end of its first year and released seven years after the harvest. 

Decanting and serving
Concentrated and complex, Chateau Musar Whites show at their best after several hours’ ‘breathing time’, and should be served ‘cellar cool’ at around 15°C. They excel with pâtés (especially foie gras), rillettes, seafood dishes and will match spicy food as the wine has such intense flavours.

Storage
To keep the wines showing at their best, bottles must be cellared in darkness, lying on their sides and not subjected to unnecessary movement or fluctuations in temperature.

The 2004 Chateau Musar is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. This is a rather civilized, laid back Musar... Its balance, combining the nice fruit, elegant mid-palate, persistent finish and backbone, gives it a tightly wound, precise and focused demeanor. The tannins are not completely integrated, but not overly hard. They provided some welcome grip and vibrancy and never overwhelmed the wine. In the long run, they should serve this wine in good stead. Overall, it is an exceptionally graceful, somewhat modern and restrained Musar, bright, with that silky texture I saw in the Hochar reviewed this issue, while adding those layers of concentration. The cherry on top is the intensity of fruit flavor – bursts of delicious and juicy fruit on the finish, admittedly nuanced by some of the gamey notes I see here so often. Call it raspberry flavored, though, because the fruit is delicious. The gamey notes were in fact moderate and, at least for my taste, not an issue. As this rather subtle Musar aired out, I liked it more and more. I’ve had Musars that were bigger, burlier, more rustic and more astringent. Here, the subtle start was unremarkable, but it gathered steam, showed remarkable finesse and then won me over. This will certainly do better with food. Drink now-2021.

As elegant as Serge Hochar himself, the man behind Château Musar, this blend of cabernet sauvignon, carignan and cinsault is lithe yet firm. The fruit feels autumnal, in shades of rust red and ocher spice, and is saturated with a spicy, foresty fragrance. It's delicious now, ready for game birds scented with juniper berries, and should live on for another decade.

Nuanced by cherries and spice, it is quite delicious...The ’00 is the powerhouse bruiser, the most rustic, while the Hochar is the approachable, easier wine. This is the one in the middle, arguably the best balance of fruit and power. On the downside, this is as gamey and funky as the 2000, but the balance is different, the wine seeming fruitier and fleshier, not quite as austere. Depending on your taste, you may find that a good thing, or prefer the more powerful and intellectual 2000. This is still powerful, I hasten to add, with drying notes on the finish, but the fruitiness melds beautifully with the barnyard notes, and it is nicely supported by the tannin rather than overwhelmed. As with the 2000, this should age well, although the 2000 should age longer, and this will be a wine some will love, and some will find has too much barnyard. Personally, I enjoyed it a lot, and was just imagining how it would work with venison. Drink now-2020.

The radiance of the fruit is suggestive of a warm year, but the tannic profile, medium body and overall structure is more similar to that of a colder vintage. In 2009 Ama did not bottle their single vineyard selections; all of the best fruit went into the Castello di Ama bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

愛伊〈Ay〉─卓越的香檳區特級園
過去 10個世紀以來,愛伊所產出的酒總被評選為世界上最優質、經典的佳釀。法王亨利四世曾說:“如果我不是國王,我願意作為封地在愛伊的王子”,因而被暱稱為『愛伊爵士』。16 世紀初,愛伊並成為法國國內及國際間唯一榮獲了 AOC 品質認證的葡萄產區。

Clos La Madeleine 2012 

今日介紹Moueix家族的Belair Monange 的鄰居Clos La Madeleine, 呢間莊早年被巴黎的投資人購入,但沒有用心經營。直至1992年被投資公司SOGEFI 買下,進行大規模改革,設備升級。

Clos La Madeleine 座落St Emilion 高地及斜坡地,同Ausone 的土質類似,和Belair Monange的一樣,先天條件非常好。不過,酒莊佔地僅有2.3公頃,種植76%Merlot, 24%Cabernet Franc, 年產只有500箱(6000支),2007年請到一級莊Angelus金鐘莊主,也是釀酒師的 Hubert de Bouard 做顧問,酒質突飛猛進,2012年係St Emilion 六年一次的評級中,晉升為列級莊Grand Cru Classe. 雖然成名,但認識的飲家仲係唔多,酒價也很相宜。直至2017年又被Moueix家族重金收購,好彩未被拼入Belair Monange, 還是保留Clos La Madeleine 的名稱。

2018年底返過一次貨和試飲過,係我的角度,呢個莊是Hidden Gems, 擁有超級名莊同樣的土質,唔出名,賣價超值,飲落是Terroir driven,香氣撲鼻,酒體優雅。

This wine showed beautifully in my tasting. From a tiny (29 acres) jewel of a property on the hillsides of St.-Emilion , not far from the big boys of the plateau area (Ausone, Belair, etc), the 2012 is dense purple in color, with sweet black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, some crushed rock and floral notes, medium to full body, not a hard edge to be found, and a lush, well-proportioned, beautifully pure finish. This is impressive wine is clearly a sleeper of the vintage, but quantities are very small. Drink it over the next 15 years. The final blend was 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a completely different story. It is a worthy follower of the 2001, the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity, bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that's possible–umami?) and developed, with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices, leathery notes, cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp, with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence.

The Rossignols are large land-owners in Gevrey enabling them to retain the fruit only from their oldest vines, the rest being sold anonymously. The result is a wine close to premier cru quality, fermented with 30% whole bunches and aged in 10% new oak.

An open nose of alluring black cherries, cream and flower petals gives way to a finely structured palate. The style is rich and deep, with succulent fruit nicely balanced by complex secondary aromas and flavours and an earthiness characteristic of this village. One of the best Gevrey Chambertin village level wines available, and as such this is great value.

After several listless performances from this superb terroir near Cheval Blanc and the Pomerol border, La Dominique's 2006 exhibits a dense purple color and a sweet nose of licorice, nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), raspberry, and kirsch. Full, with a certain flamboyance, ripe tannins, and a layered, long finish, this is a terrific La Dominique to drink over the next 12-14 years.

Full ruby-red. Aromas of black plum, molten chocolate, mocha and licorice show a slightly liqueur-like aspect. Creamy-sweet and lush, with a generous texture to the black cherry, violet and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes sweet and smoothly tannic but with good backbone. This is the first vintage to be vinified by Jean-Luc Thunevin.

Drink this sleeper of the vintage over the next decade.

Luca d'Attoma is a highly respected Tuscan wine consultant, employers have included Azienda Agricola Le Macchiole in Bolgheri and Tua Rita, who, along with wife Elena Celli, eventually realised a dream to produce his own wine. Luca and Elena are the Duemani 'two hands' that run the estate. They first identified a wonderful site in the north Bolgheri hills in the mid nineties. The purchase 7 ha of land and set about preparing the soils for Biodynamic viticulture. This took seven years. The first vines were planted in 2001 and already, by the 2008 vintage, they have started to make some outstanding wines. The structure of the soil here is remarkable for its predominance of clay and stone – the resulting low soil fertility leading to greater character and complexity in the vines fruit. After an examination of the property and its unique position in the contour of a west-facing amphitheatre there emerged the sites of three distinct vineyards. The vineyard at the highest altitude and with the richest soil is the site of their Cabernet Franc vines. Another lower vineyard continues with the same varietal and then evolves into rows of Merlot vines. The third and smallest   vineyard, notably stony and arid, is the 'heart' of the estate and is planted to 7000 vines of alberello-trained Syrah. From the very beginning Duemani have followed the principles of biodynamic farming and since the 2004 harvest their estate's production.

The 2014 Lytton Springs is another absolutely gorgeous wine. Perhaps because of its relatively recent bottling, the 2004 feels a bit compressed, but there appears to be plenty of complexity and depth hiding behind the acidity and tannin. Far from an easygoing Zinfandel, the 2014 Lytton is a wine to buy and cellar for at least a handful of years. The wine's richness, persistence and vertical intensity all lead me to believe it will be special in time. Black cherry, pomegranate, mint and sweet spices meld into the resonant finish. A kick of tannin from the Petite adds personality, something the 2014 has in spades.

More fresh and elegant than the Geyserville, with a touch more focus, the 2014 Lytton Springs is another beautiful wine from this estate. Made from 69% Zinfandel, 18% Petite Sirah and the rest Carignan and Mourvèdre, aged in 20% new American oak, it boasts fabulous notes of plums, blackberry jam, toasted spice and licorice as well as medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful mid-palate depth and notable tannin. The Geyserville is a touch sexier, but this will be longer lived. Give bottles 2-3 years of cellaring and enjoy over the following decade or more.

This is classic Pessac-Leognan with leafy tobacco, smoky red and black currant, forest floor, cedar, and graphite notes. It is a medium-bodied wine of impeccable purity, texture, and balance.

Disgorged six months ago, the latest rendition of the NV Brut Special Cuvée was bottled in 2015, and while its core derives from the 2014 vintage, it contains fully 60% reserve wines. The wine wafts from the glass with a classic bouquet of apples, pear, walnut oil and clear honey, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate that's broad-shouldered and Pinot Noir-driven, with a pinpoint mousse, nice tension at the core and a delicately chalky finish. Gilles Descotes commented that one of his biggest challenges is finding enough wine raised in wood to make the Special Cuvée in years where Grandé Année is producedand to that end, Bollinger is significantly expanding its barrel program to ferment even more base wine in used oak.

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Jan 2010) : It is fascinating to taste the 2006 Le Serre Nuove (magnum), the second wine of Ornellaia, in this setting, as it shows quite well, especially next to some of the Ornellaias from smaller vintages. Le Serre Nuove is naturally made to be more accessible than Ornellaia and contains a higher percentage of Merlot, which gives it a touch more roundness. The fleshy, generous 2006 Le Serre Nuove offers terrific balance in an enveloping, warm expression of this important vintage. I have little doubt that current vintages of Le Serre Nuove are actually better wines than the early vintages of Ornellaia, which highlights how much viticulture and oenology have developed here over the last 20+ years. The 2006 Le Serre Nuove is 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. The estate employs shorter fermentation and maceration times lasting 10-15 days and gives the wine 15 months in French oak, 25% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. 

91 points James Suckling ( Nov 2010 ): This is always fruity and pretty, with a currant and plum character. On the palate this is full, soft, and juicy with tobacco, berry and a touch of vanilla. No need to wait, pull the cork tonight.
