In youth: yellow-gold, subtly oaky, and creamy-textured, rich yet dry and intensely citrusy, with honeyed nuances. Wholly unique, the style has been described as resembling ‘dry Sauternes’ or mature white Graves. Chateau Musar Whites develop tawny hues and mellow spicy characters as they age. The cellars at Ghazir holds bottles of this wine dating as far back as 1954. 

Grapes and vines
Seven years in the making, Chateau Musar White is a blend of ancient grape varieties Obaideh and Merwah, indigenous to the mountains of Lebanon and said to be related to Chasselas Chardonnay and Semillon. The Obaideh vineyards are in the foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountains on stony, chalky soils, while the Merwah vines are on the seaward side of Mount Lebanon, on calcareous gravels. Yields are very low for these untrained bushvines: 10 - 20 hl per hectare. At high altitude (around 1400m) they are still on their own roots, among very few vineyards in the world of this calibre.

Winemaking
Chateau Musar White is fermented in French oak barriques (from the forest of Nevers) for 9 months, bottled and blended at the end of its first year and released seven years after the harvest. 

Decanting and serving
Concentrated and complex, Chateau Musar Whites show at their best after several hours’ ‘breathing time’, and should be served ‘cellar cool’ at around 15°C. They excel with pâtés (especially foie gras), rillettes, seafood dishes and will match spicy food as the wine has such intense flavours.

Storage
To keep the wines showing at their best, bottles must be cellared in darkness, lying on their sides and not subjected to unnecessary movement or fluctuations in temperature.

The Colonial Estate's two flagship wines come from their own property. The 2006 Exile was sourced from a single 140-year-old vineyard with the blend consisting of 85% Shiraz, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% Grenache. Opaque purple/black in color, it exhibits a captivating perfume of toasty oak, smoke, black pepper, truffle, blueberry pie, and blackberry liqueur. Complex, silky-textured, and nicely balanced, this layered, lengthy wine will continue to improve over the next 4-6 years and have a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2026.

About The Colonial Estate
In the middle 1800's the Lange family settled from Bavaria in the Barossa Valley. The vineyard that they decided to plant was just off the main road of Nuriootpa. The vines have been dry grown since then and the grapes have gone into the great and good of Australia including "Grange". Like "Chateau Haut-Brion" the town has grown up around it and it is now an oasis of a vineyard with houses surrounding it.

Exile is 100% sourced from the "Lange" Vineyard, now a part of The Colonial Estate. The single-vineyard wine is made up of old vine Shiraz with some Mourvedre and Muscadelle. The age of some of these vines date back to the 1800's.

The wine is made in the French fashion – low cropping aided by green harvesting, handpicking into trays, and double-triage on arrival at the winery. The wooden vats – shipped from Cognac in France -appear incongruous in their setting. The wine is picked ripe and, after vinification, poured into pure new French oak.

Intensely floral, high-pitched aromas of black raspberry, mulberry, violet and rose, lifted by a pungent peppery quality. Spicy dark berry flavors gain flesh and sweetness with air, picking up a smoky mineral quality and a note of candied violet. Finishes juicy and very long, with berry skin and floral notes. 

92 points Wine Enthusiast ​(2/2010) : Somewhat precariously balanced at 15.7% alcohol, this may not turn out to be the most long-lived Shiraz, but it is delicious for current consumption. The tannins are soft and creamy in texture, while the blueberry and black berry fruit is intensely concentrated, tinged with nuances of vanilla, menthol and chocolate. 

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ​ ((JM) 12/2009):  My favorite of the Garden Series is the 2007 Shiraz Lily’s Garden from McLaren Vale. Purple-colored, it has an enticing perfume of balsam wood, lavender, incense, pepper, bacon, and blueberry. With excellent grip and balance, this smooth-textured, savory Shiraz will improve over the next 2-3 years and drink well through 2020.

The 2004 Chateau Musar is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. This is a rather civilized, laid back Musar... Its balance, combining the nice fruit, elegant mid-palate, persistent finish and backbone, gives it a tightly wound, precise and focused demeanor. The tannins are not completely integrated, but not overly hard. They provided some welcome grip and vibrancy and never overwhelmed the wine. In the long run, they should serve this wine in good stead. Overall, it is an exceptionally graceful, somewhat modern and restrained Musar, bright, with that silky texture I saw in the Hochar reviewed this issue, while adding those layers of concentration. The cherry on top is the intensity of fruit flavor – bursts of delicious and juicy fruit on the finish, admittedly nuanced by some of the gamey notes I see here so often. Call it raspberry flavored, though, because the fruit is delicious. The gamey notes were in fact moderate and, at least for my taste, not an issue. As this rather subtle Musar aired out, I liked it more and more. I’ve had Musars that were bigger, burlier, more rustic and more astringent. Here, the subtle start was unremarkable, but it gathered steam, showed remarkable finesse and then won me over. This will certainly do better with food. Drink now-2021.

As elegant as Serge Hochar himself, the man behind Château Musar, this blend of cabernet sauvignon, carignan and cinsault is lithe yet firm. The fruit feels autumnal, in shades of rust red and ocher spice, and is saturated with a spicy, foresty fragrance. It's delicious now, ready for game birds scented with juniper berries, and should live on for another decade.

Nuanced by cherries and spice, it is quite delicious...The ’00 is the powerhouse bruiser, the most rustic, while the Hochar is the approachable, easier wine. This is the one in the middle, arguably the best balance of fruit and power. On the downside, this is as gamey and funky as the 2000, but the balance is different, the wine seeming fruitier and fleshier, not quite as austere. Depending on your taste, you may find that a good thing, or prefer the more powerful and intellectual 2000. This is still powerful, I hasten to add, with drying notes on the finish, but the fruitiness melds beautifully with the barnyard notes, and it is nicely supported by the tannin rather than overwhelmed. As with the 2000, this should age well, although the 2000 should age longer, and this will be a wine some will love, and some will find has too much barnyard. Personally, I enjoyed it a lot, and was just imagining how it would work with venison. Drink now-2020.

As the 2012 is already sold out, the 2013 Roda is the one in the market, and it has been in bottle since July 2015. 2013 was not an easy vintage, and they had to harvest selectively to come to this blend of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano, which has higher acidity than normal after the usual natural fermentation in oak vats and élevage in barriques. This is a completely different vintage from 2012, as 2013 was a very cold and wet year; the Mediterranean varieties did not achieve enough ripeness, and they couldn't include any Garnacha. The rain was needed after two very dry years, but the ripening of grapes was not homogeneous. It's an atypical year after 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, with fine wines, lots of freshness and vibrant tannins—a truly Atlantic, cool-climate vintage.

94 pts James Suckling: Lovely depth of fruit to this mature red with chocolate, dark tea and bark. Purple flowers and violets. Full and very silky and refined. A beautiful traditional wine to get to know.

93 pts Wine Advocate: The 2005 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from their vineyards in the meander of the Ebro River, where they have some 100 hectares of vineyards. The wine fermented in the original oak vats that are now some 140 years of age. There is no temperature control and malolactic was also in the vat. The wine was transferred to oak barrels where it slowly matured in their deep, humid caves for no less than six years. After this, it was bottled unfiltered after being fined with egg whites. I think the quality gap between the Reserva and Gran Reserva has been getting smaller since the 2001 vintage and this 2005 is nothing short of exceptional. It's clean and complex, with more freshness. The wine is very spicy and with a palate that feels very balanced, livelier than in the past. It has a long finish where the flavors are clean. Easy to drink and very pleasurable. Some 250,000 bottles were produced in 2005.

Tasting Note: “Kirsch, black cherry, dark chocolate and cassis all abouund on the nose and palate. This is enticing and very plush with a good cherry and damson fruit core. Granular with ripe tannins and although there is clearly high levels of glycerol and sweetness of fruit it is all managed and held in check. The dollop Malbec gives a black pepper and spicey edge to the wine, the Merolt giving weight and roundness and the Cabernet Sauvignon keeping the structure”.

Series M takes its name from the Malbec and Merlot which predominantly define the style of this wine. Series M is sensuous wine with a firm core structure for aging. Malbec provides its black fruit aromas and fleshy texture, Merlot adds softness and red fruit aromas, and Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure.

About Vilafonte:
Vilafonté is the first American and South African joint wine-making venture within the global wine community. This ground-breaking red wine project is a partnership between a well respected group of 'quality driven' wine specialists from South Africa and the United States. The name, Vilafonté, derives from the primary soil type of the 100 acre estate, whose character forms the foundation of the wines.

Zelma Long is Head Winemaker for the Vilafonté project. Zelma is one of America's best known winemakers. One of the first women to study enology and viticulture at U.C. Davis, she began her winemaking career at Robert Mondavi Winery, rapidly working into the Chief Winemaker position.

Vilafonté's General Manager is Michael Ratcliffe. Mike qualified as a business major before attending the University of Adelaide. Mike is Managing Director of his family estate, Warwick which is recognized as one of South Africa's foremost wine estates.

Phil Freese is head 'wine-grower' and creator of the Vilafonté vineyard which he calls "Different by Design". Phil spent 13 years as Robert Mondavi’s Vice-President of Wine Growing. The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a completely different story. It is a worthy follower of the 2001, the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity, bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that's possible–umami?) and developed, with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices, leathery notes, cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp, with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence.

92 Points Antonio Galloni: Deep red with ruby tinges. Delicately flinty and herbal notes complicate sour red cherry, redcurrant and underbrush aromas. Fresh and juicy but with an almost austere quality to the crisp red berry and minty plum flavors. Finishes long and clean with a mineral nuance. The herbal note disapperars with aeration, so it’s of paramount importance to give this wine plenty of air. Pacenti makes 20,000 bottles a year of this Brunello from 25 to 35 year old vines with roughly 75-80% of the grapes grown in the northern Pellagrilli estate vineyards and the rest from the Piancornello vineyards in the southern reaches Montalcino.

The bouquet peels off slowly with rich intensity and dark fruit notes of black cherry, plum, soft spice, tobacco and licorice. You don't get any of the bitter or thorny acidity that can sometimes make Brunello difficult to love, especially in its youth. This wine is appropriate for near or medium-term drinking.

The Rossignols are large land-owners in Gevrey enabling them to retain the fruit only from their oldest vines, the rest being sold anonymously. The result is a wine close to premier cru quality, fermented with 30% whole bunches and aged in 10% new oak.

An open nose of alluring black cherries, cream and flower petals gives way to a finely structured palate. The style is rich and deep, with succulent fruit nicely balanced by complex secondary aromas and flavours and an earthiness characteristic of this village. One of the best Gevrey Chambertin village level wines available, and as such this is great value.

No other wine I tasted among the new releases in Montalcino achieves this unique level of aromatic finesse and distinction. The bouquet is almost purely floral in character with a strong emphasis on pressed rose petal, dried violets and potpourri. The fruit tones are less emphatic and include bright cherry and red currant. In the mouth, the wine's compressed texture is accented by fennel seed and licorice. the 2009 vintage had more power and heat, but this version shows elegant restraint. 93+ (ML)

This is a strong effort from La Pointe, another estate that seems to be producing better and better wines. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2011 reveals a dense ruby/plum/purple color, a sweet perfume of black raspberries, black currants, licorice and subtle high quality oak, medium to full body, and an expansive, broad, pure texture. Drink this sleeper of the vintage over the next decade.
