Developed rim on ruby. Scented and full of minerals. Rather straight backed and upright. Lovely sweetness and delicacy with the tannins completely retreated. Not sickly sweet like some of the more made-up Margaux but a great classic claret that is only medium, even quite lightweight and finishes dry. This doesn’t have that much more to give but it is utterly charming.

RP90 "Deep ruby/purple, with sweet cranberry, mulberry and raspberry/blueberry fruit, this is always a distinctive St.-Julien and the 2012 has managed to avoid any of the hollowness or harsh tannins that can afflict some of the Médocs. It is elegant, well-made and an outstanding effort in this vintage. Drink it over the next 15 or more years. "

An excellent effort, the 2011 Gloria continues the success this well-known property has enjoyed over the last several decades. A delicious concoction of red and black fruits, spice box, and earth as well as a silky textured, medium-bodied style emerge from this is an undeniable sleeper of the vintage. The round tannins, delicious fruit and forward character suggest it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.

"It has a light but well defined bouquet with notes of redcurrant, boysenberry, mint leaf and cedar with good intensity and vigour. It reminds more of Las-Cases ’81 in some ways. The palate is medium-bodied with a dry, quite savoury entry, powdery and slightly edgy tannins. The fruit appears to be fading although the secondary flavours and compensating with touches of Chinese 5-spice, orange zest, dried blood and sandalwood. Classic old skool St-Julien towards the finish that has moderate length."

Without much fanfare, Leoville-Barton continues to turn out textbook Medocs of great style, aging potential, and richness. Of utmost interest, these wines are priced among the most sensible of all the finest classified growths. No doubt the proprietor, Anthony Barton, has a healthy ego, but it is not reflected in his pro-consumer pricing policy. In the last three difficult vintages, Leoville-Barton has produced one of the most successful 1991s, a delicious 1992, and an authoritatively-flavored, powerful yet elegant 1993. The latter wine is potentially the best Leoville-Barton of the last three years. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent purity, a classic nose of cedar, cassis, spice, and oak, and admirable concentration, this beautifully balanced, rich, stylish wine requires 4-6 years of cellaring; it will keep for two decades. Impressive!

Owned and managed by the team at Léoville Poyferré, Moulin Riche always offers excellent value for money and seems likely to do so again in this vintage. Immediately fresh and vibrant, this is a very pure style. With dark berry fruit, some smoky character and crushed stone structure to the tannins and a vein of acidity that gives this an almost-linear tautness, this is quite a grown-up wine in this vintage.

This imposing estate owes its name to Connetable Talbot, the English general and governor of the province of Guyenne who was defeated at the famous Battle of Castillon in 1453.
Talbot's vines grow in an ideal location bordering an estuary, on some of the region's most highly prized gravel rises which alone produce great wine. Talbot is one of the oldest estates in the Medoc, and its reputation has been in the hands of experienced managers, and always shown itself to be worthy of its inclusion in the 1855 classification.
Owners of Talbot since the early 20th century, the Cordier family have perpetuation the commitment to quality of their predecessors. At Talbot, wine is very much past, present, and future. Therefore, tradition and technical innovations both count a great deal.

The 2011 Ducru Beaucaillou (which normally represents 1/3 to ½ of the entire crop) possesses a dense ruby/purple color along with a beautiful nose of sweet creme de cassis, crushed rock and spring flower aromas. This rich, medium to full-bodied St.-Julien is among the most concentrated wines of the Medoc. Moderate tannin is sweet and well-integrated. This beauty will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and keep for two decades. Drink 2017 - 2037.

This isn't quite as good as the 2010 and 2009 Ducrus, but it's not far behind: a concentrated, yet very polished St Julien from the lowest yields ever at the château. Sweet and intense, with hauntingly floral aromas, notes of cassis, plums and currant, fresh acidity and rich, yet silky tannins leading to a bright, refreshing finish. Powerful yet restrained, this is a keeper. 15+ years.

Clean and bright in the mouth, with taut blackcurrant and dark cherry flavors picking up sweetness with air. The flinty black cherry note repeats on the finish, which features a subtle floral pastille quality and very good persistence. I like this wine's understated character, but I wish it had a little more flesh and sweetness for an even higher score."

The selection process under proprietor Bruno Borie is so severe at Ducru Beaucaillou that readers should be giving serious attention to the second wine, Croix de Beaucaillou, which sports a dramatic black and gold label. The 2011 exhibits attractive black currant and black cherry fruit, medium body, silky tannins and a lush, round, up-front appeal. Enjoy it over the next decade.

The 2008 is nevertheless a robust wine, with both ripeness and a savoury edge, with a cocoa bitterness, notes of woodsmoke and textural tannins. Drink now or keep until 2018.
