This is very new world in the nose with loads of ripe, raisiny, and spicy fruit. Full bodied, with a round and chewy finish. Very extracted, but I think it will come around very well in the end.

TASTING SCORES

The resulting wine has both the power and the     elegance.  Nice freshness on the nose and palate. The tannins are firms but silky.

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VINTAGE

Winter and Spring were dry. Since the beginning, climatic conditions predicted an early vintage. The water deficit worsened a little more up to July and the high temperatures in June made the vine suffered.  The Merlot sagged after flowering because of these unusual dryness and heat.

2011 experienced unusual weather conditions that ultimately benefited many Cabernet Sauvignons. The grapes had a very good concentration of phenol compounds and very elegant tannins. The challenge of this vintage was a very strict sorting of the grapes. However, there is a lower yield (- 10%)  due to the weather, and the berries were rather small with a thick skin.

The new wood flavors on this wine are becoming well integrated with the velvet fruit textures. The tannins are now an adjunct to the fruit, which shows fresh spice and sweetness. It is becoming a fine, balanced wine, delicate and perfumed.

There's lovely fruit in this wine, with berry, chocolate and plum aromas and flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. A very balanced Kirwan. Best from 2011 through 2016. 7,080 cases made.

Another great wine in this vintage, the 2012 Malescot offers up tremendous level of black fruits, charcoal and intense, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, sensational purity, low acidity and ripe tannins. It is full-bodied, stunning, multidimensional, and a compelling example of this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030+.

Beautiful aromas and flavors of cassis, ripe black cherries and raspberries. Some earth, too. This is a full-bodied red with silky tannins and a long, fruity finish. Juicy. Better in 2018.

This is distinctive, with a roasted alder streak running through an enticing core of crushed plum, blackberry and black currant confiture flavors. Long and velvety on the finish, with bay, tobacco and black tea accents checking in. This is suave, with fruit and terroir in spades, particularly for the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2025.

Bright, full ruby-red. Sexy, syrah-like aromas of blackberry, violet, smoke, game and underbrush. Densely packed and fine-grained, with lovely inner-mouth floral lift to its crushed berry flavors. A very rich and sweet style of Margaux, but the broad, dusty, building tannins call for some cellaring. Boasts excellent length for a wine from this chateau.

93 points Decanter (July 2012):

Sumptuous cassis and blackberry nose, with a good deal of new oak. Sleek, elegant, poised, with great intensity and purity of fruit. There's spice and vigour on the mid-palate, but it's taut, tightly wound, and not very expressive now. The firm tannins contribute to a very long, chewy finish. Evidently needs time.

A bright, ripe style, with very fresh crushed plum, raspberry and blackberry fruit wrapped in silky tannins and laced with hints of anise and black tea. The rounded finish has modest grip for mid-term cellaring. Drink now through 2020.

This wine is concentrated ripe, full fruits, as well as intense acidity. It shows a forward style but doesn’t losing sight of its tight, dark structure. Drink this balanced wine from 2017.

Typically, the quintessential feminine side of Margaux is represented by Prieure-Lichine-s 2011. Floral, raspberry, black cherry and currant notes intermixed with spice box are present in this deep ruby/purple-colored effort. The richness builds incrementally and becomes more impressive than it initially seems. A well-made, supple-textured, delicious 2011, it is an undeniable success for the vintage. Enjoy it over the next 15+ years.

This is a concentrated wine for the vintage, with spice and earth character. Full body, chewy tannins and a long finish. A little rustic now but will deliver so much pleasure. Better in 2016.

Frankly ripe, offering broad, velvety layers of raspberry and blackberry confiture, lined with cocoa and fruitcake notes. Sports a toasty edge, with enough lively, briary grip to keep it honest.

This is a 30-year wine.
