The warmth of the vintage comes through in the wine's generosity, yet there are no suggestions whatsoever of over- ripeness. This is a magnificent Montevetrano. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.

The 2007 Montevetrano suggests a more prominent presence of Cabernet Sauvignon, aromatically speaking, compared to the other wines in this mini retrospective. The percentage of grapes used is the same but this impression is reinforced by the warmth of the summer growing season and the exuberance of the fruit. Blackberry aromas are followed by spice, leather and tar. There are subtle notes of balsam herb and green peppercorn as well. The wine is structured and firm but not astringent. The tannins are softly integrated and fine in texture.

Fresh and juicy but with an almost austere quality to the crisp red berry and minty plum flavors. Finishes long and clean with a mineral nuance. The herbal note disapperars with aeration, so it’s of paramount importance to give this wine plenty of air. Pacenti makes 20,000 bottles a year of this Brunello from 25 to 35 year old vines with roughly 75-80% of the grapes grown in the northern Pellagrilli estate vineyards and the rest from the Piancornello vineyards in the southern reaches Montalcino.
92 Points The Wine Advocate : Boasting contemporary lines and a generously extracted style, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli delivers an approach that will appeal to a wider circle of consumers, far outside hardcore Brunello enthusiasts. The bouquet peels off slowly with rich intensity and dark fruit notes of black cherry, plum, soft spice, tobacco and licorice. You don't get any of the bitter or thorny acidity that can sometimes make Brunello difficult to love, especially in its youth. This wine is appropriate for near or medium-term drinking.

Taste: The mouth-feel is full and round with thick elegant tannins Tenuta Mara Mia is a small vineyard in Romagna, Italy, which was started quite recently in 2000 by Giordano Emendatori in dedication to his wife Mara Emendatori. What’s interesting and completely unconventional at Tenuta Mara Mia is that the grapes are grown to the notes of Mozart and birds chirping. Nesting boxes for birds are purposely build on the vineyard to encourage them to live on the vineyard and eat the insects, maintaining the balance of this ecosystem and classical music like Mozart played to create an atmosphere of liveliness. Giordano and Mara believes that this creates a happy and thriving environment for the vines!

The first Cabernet grapes were picked on September 10th under perfect conditions, with yields a little lower than average. As is usual at Tenuta San Guido, the fruit for Sassicaia was gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel using natural yeasts. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine spent two years in French oak prior to bottling. This is certainly an exceptional Sassicaia, with a sumptuous nose of ripe, creamy black and red fruit with cedar and spice notes. The colour is by no means dark (as is often the case with Sassicaia), and the impression on the palate is one of controlled power underpinned by gorgeous sweetness and flowing elegance. This is a very confident wine with real authority and presence, beginning with a magnificent attack of rich cassis and ripe griotte cherry followed by cigar box and leather notes, and a long finish of savoury bay leaf and minerals. It's deceptively structured, the tannins wonderfully ripe, creamy and finely textured, while the juicy acidity also suggests that this wine has a very long life ahead of it. This 2015 exhibits everything that you’d want from Sassicaia - and more - because of its winning combination of winemaking savoir-faire, world-class terroir, old vine fruit, and an outstanding vintage. It is unarguably stunning.

I suppose after so many important vintages it is only natural that Mother Nature takes a break. Terra di Lavoro is usually a huge wine in its youth, but not so in 2009. This is one of the most open, approachable young Terra di Lavoros I have ever tasted. The wine shows good intensity in its dark fruit, with layers of ash, smoke, crushed flowers and minerals that develop in the glass. The 2009 is a pretty, accessible Terra di Lavoro that will make a great introduction for readers who are new to the wine and don't want to wait for some of the more important vintages to come around. Terra di Lavoro is 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso. The 2009 spent 14 months in French oak barrels, 70% new. Readers who want to see how some of the older vintages are developing may want to take a look at notes from my vertical tasting last year, published in Issue 190. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

Travaglini's 2011 Gattinara Riserva sees fruit sourced from the best rows of vines from various parcels located throughout the entire property. The wine is only produced in the best vintages. This is a more austere and structured wine with layered tones of black fruit, spice, licorice and campfire ash. There is a floral element of pressed rose petals that appears with delicate intensity at the back. In the mouth, this wine offers power and good structure.

The 2012 Giusto di Notri is an IGT Toscana blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It opens with rich, impenetrable concentration and luminous ruby highlights that shine bright against the inner darkness of this beautiful wine. Dark fruit, leather, spice, moist chewing tobacco and dark chocolate lift from the glass. The wine shows firm structure with silky tannins that render a polished texture on the finish.

One of my favorite Tua Rita wines, the 2011 Giusto di Notri sees 60% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 30% Merlot and a smaller component of Cabernet Franc. Inky dark and impenetrable, this is a hearty Tuscan red to pair with a succulent slab of charcoal-grilled steak and spicy barbecue marinade. The wine is exceedingly soft and opulent with gorgeous tones of black cherry, rum cake, crushed granite, cured meat, leather and exotic spice. This is a huge wine, in a resoundingly positive way that rewards a beautiful and intense drinking experience. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

The 2013 Perlato del Bosco is a pure Sangiovese from a vineyard located just beyond the property's main house. This is Tua Rita's biggest seller when it comes to the USA market and with good reason. It shows a unique identity with bright berry nuances backed by tangy spice, candied orange peel and blue flower. I'm also told that this is the most difficult wine to make. Sangiovese is a difficult grape to manage and special root stocks (33-19) were selected to delay ripening in order to produce smaller and more flavorful clusters. This in itself is a risky proposition because the chances of bad weather increase the longer you wait before harvest. The wine sees eight months in neutral barrique. The bouquet shows a floral component with rose petal and lavender. In the mouth, it offers amazing potential and fullness. This is an amazing value-buy.

The 2013 Perlato del Bosco is wonderfully finessed in the glass, with silky tannins and expressive aromatics that give the wine its sense of polish. Sweet red berries, mint, cinnamon and wild flowers add nuance on the rich, expansive finish. This is a classic example of Suvereto Sangiovese, where the warm, dry weather yields ample, generous wines. There is plenty to like here.
